“Global container trade has matured over the past years and is growing at a slower pace. Iran has the potential to be the market that stands out with faster growth,” Christian Juul-Nyholm, managing director, UAE cluster, Maersk Line, was quoted as saying by JOC.com.

Macros VS Micros

rahat-talrejaThe year 2014 looked tired. There was a feeling that things have reached a top rapidly and therefore we were entering a long phase of consolidation for economies and businesses across the world after the golden decade of 2004-2014.

It quickly dawned upon all that 2015 is even slower than 2014. The year saw fresh addition of equity and debt to balance sheets across the spectrum of economies and businesses. Existing capital was not performing in line.

And as the year 2015 eventually sunk in, people soon realised that 2016 was even slower. Actually threatening world economies and you have seen that the most active participants in the year were central banks, on whom a lot depended to let liquidity bail us all out of the slowdown.

2016 mellowed ambition and let pragmatism set into economies. All capital in the world realised that beggars cannot be choosers. Preservation of capital became central over Return on capital. Emerging markets offered short term returns on world capital but corresponding currency depreciation over the last 30 months eroded that significantly.

Let me turn the focus now on India specifically. The Indian economy was responding to this new phase of consolidation and distribution. Why not? 52 % of the sales of the top 100 Nifty (Indian stock index) companies came from exports. Also domestic consumption was muted and savings also took a hit since sustenance expenditure elevated due to real estate inflation. By the way the inflation which we calculate is based on farm and factory output data which is obsolete in today’s times to calculate urban inflation. When you sit and have a 300 Rupee coffee, you pay for the real estate on which you sit and not the coffee itself. So to take farm output cost of coffee will never reveal the real picture.

But if you ask me, how does all of the above matter at all. It is only good academic data and can be used to talk at social events where everybody has something to say on how economy and country should be running. Then eat food, gulp your drink and go home. Macros matter but Micros are the real test of your mettle.

And this brings me to individual businesses. We saw all of them realign to the newer market realities. Over stretched companies collapsed. Rightly allocated ones survived. But there are a whole lot of companies who actually became more efficient and profitable in this macro environment.

The non-performers always hide using the macro slowdown and emerge taking credit during the macro boom. But the real fighters are those businesses who use all events to their efficient realignment.

In my view, any company turning less than USD 20 million remains largely unaffected due to any macro events on the global or domestic economy level. Their industry macro decides their micro. Let me give an example: There were two boys in the same college. One dull, the other very bright. After 20 years, they met. The dull boy went on to become a senior executive of a construction company and the bright boy was the top executive of an airline. Needless to say, the dull boy was doing far better for himself because his industry macro supported him more.

What is basically required in dull times are:

Honesty: This is a building block to be courageous. We have to accept realities as they are and in their right context rather than masquerading them without own bias and inhibitions.

Courage: To take bold decisions. Brash is not bold. In fact it’s the opposite. Bold is to do what is required and not do what shouldn’t be done. Sounds clichéd but it needs real courage to do it.

Sharp analytical skills: To take the right decisions. Many pound foolish and penny wise decisions are purely due to lack of any meaningful analysis.

Change: Randomness is not change. In fact keeping business fundamentals constant are a good measure of change. Also change should meaningfully and tangibly yield a result and not just alter emotional situations.

Perform: From top to bottom, everybody has a role to play and needs to perform to his best ability. Ability to recognise ability and be secure about it is the hallmark of all successful business leaders. In fact, it is by standing on their shoulders of giants that one sees the world.

Be Strong: Strong is not speech power, it is will power. Strong is not talking, it is silence. Strong is not intimidation, it is accommodation. Strong is not indulgence, it is restraint. Strong is not rhetoric, it is reality. Strong is not intelligence, it is wisdom.

2017 approaches.

I wish everyone realigns and hope that India Inc reaches its full potential. To all my fellow business brethren, this is a small poem. I hope it gives hope to all.

He Fell.
He Faltered,
But didn’t Fail.
He waited.
Waited for Long.
Almost Forever.
And then it came,
His time.
Under the Sun.

Your Decision or A Behavioural Response?

A friend recently commented on how everyone seems to focus on finding out reasons as to why we do things. When, in response, I mentioned ‘Behavioural Economics’ his eyes started to glaze over; rising towards the ceiling. “Not another trend?” he asked. So tried to explain why I felt that this particular approach deserved fuller consideration.

A six year old school girl invited her class mate round to her home.  Showing her round the other six year old asked, “Where is the rest of the house?” Now some might be offended with such a comment but remember it is said that ‘out of the mouths of babes’.  It just so happened that one of the girls lived in an ordinary suburban two bed-room home whereas the other was the daughter of a film star and she had only ever lived in an eight bed-room mansion estate. She had never known any other home so naturally and curiously she wondered why her school friend lived in such a small home – hence, “Where is the rest of your house?” Now, of course, as the little girl becomes older she will start to appreciate more the differences between all of us. She did not realise that, if she had been older, many would have been offended by her question.

This simple example basically illustrates what ‘Behavioural Economics’ is all about. It’s a method of economic analysis that applies psychological insights into human behaviour to explain economic decision-making. Subconsciously we are all influenced by our background and upbringing both socially, culturally and economically. Some of our experiences we remember and others are somewhere deep within our subconscious.  However when it comes to making decisions behavioural economics explains why often they are not totally rational. Behavioural economics explores why people sometimes make irrational decisions, and why and how their behaviour does not follow the predictions of economic models.

If you think about it you may come to the conclusion that the world in which we live is a communal institutional response to our own biology. We are collectively the creators and motivators of our own interactive future both consciously and unconsciously and it is the unconscious element that gives rise to unpredictable outcomes.

Additionally our nature means that we all are motivated by various degrees, depending on our upbringing, to focus on the ‘now moment’.  Given a choice which would you go for – $100 cash in your hand now or $110 cash in seven days’ time? You are the exception if you choose the future amount of $110! Accordingly when it comes to making decisions we have to remember that, to ensure that we are fully aware of our future plans and aims, we have to deliberately make our long-term goals a focused consideration. Otherwise the ‘now moment’ will prevail and obscure our forward-looking objectives.

As with the six year old school girls, as we grow older, we forget many influences which have become part of our make-up and consequently impact on us when we make decisions. A well-known saying is; – ‘If you want to become a millionaire first start mixing and socialising with millionaires’. The simplicity of this statement, in terms of behavioural economics, should be obvious. Those without money are clearly not able to think and act as those with money. If you mix with millionaires then ones thinking is bound to change and will influence the way you act and take decisions.

The boss of a United Kingdom holiday tour company recalled one of their mistakes, a lesson to be learnt, on the way to becoming a millionaire. Initially, starting the company from a small back-street office, they had always wanted a car with their own personal number plate. Eventually the day came and an article, in the national press, was published showing their picture in front of his car. It stated how he had paid $20, 00 for the one off number plate. He was happy but it turned out his customers were not as sales started to fall away. He had failed to appreciate that they might consider he was boasting about his success. Spending $20,000 on an apparent frivolous item, when clients had to save in order to pay for their annual holiday, created a negative two-way behavioural economics response, not least because established millionaires instinctively known the dangers inherent in flaunting ones wealth.

Behavioural economists also look at the roles of habit and trust in consumer choice. Proponents of behavioural economics realise that they do not have much to tell psychologists about how individuals makes decisions but rather they have a lot to learn from psychologists. The coming together of individuals from diverse backgrounds, is however, what behavioural economics is about. It endeavours to explain why we sometimes make irrational decisions, and why and how our behaviour does not follow the predictions of economic models.

So the next time you are at the supermarket check-out ask yourself, ‘Do I really want to buy that bar of chocolate or should I get an apple instead?” Train yourself to knowingly make a decision based on going along with the majority’s instinctive choice or planning for your own future with a healthy lifestyle because this will knowingly be behavioural economics – in action!

World’s Largest Shipyard To Be Built In Saudi Arabia

HaskoningDHV UK and Hyundai Engineering & Construction have been selected to perform the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) for the infrastructure of a new maritime yard in Ras Al-Khair in Saudi Arabia.

The maritime yard will comprise a separate shipyard facility for large shipbuilding, large ship repair, offshore rigs fabrication, and offshore support vessel repair. As planned, this facility will become the largest maritime yard in the world providing a range of services. It will be located north of Jubail on the Arabian Gulf. Royal HaskoningDHV’s specialist shipyard consultancy experience combined with Hyundai E&C’s track record in Engineering-Procurement-Construction (EPC) projects will provide comprehensive technical knowledge for all elements of the shipyard’s design.

Adrian Arnold, project director at Royal HaskoningDHV said: “Maritime yards must be globally competitive with facilities which are cost-effective, operationally flexible, and durable. This project combines four different yards into a single development, creating significant opportunities for economies of scale and enhancing the country’s economic development.”

The maritime yard will have an impressive range of facilities including seven fully-equipped dry docks, two basins and five piers, a shiplift system, workshops, warehouses, utility services areas, as well as office buildings, living quarters, and recreational facilities for more than 10,000 workers.

Royal HaskoningDHV undertook the initial market study for the maritime yard in 2014. The FEED development work is now scheduled to take five months.

Reduction in The Movement Of Empty Container Will Cut Down Co2 Emissions: Research Says

A research conducted by the Spain based Intermodal firm, Connectainer Intermodal Solutions, reveals that adoption of efficient means to put the empty shipping containers into effective use and thereby limiting their movement around the globe could significantly lower CO2 and other green-house gas emissions. Reports shows that about 21 percent of all containers moved per year are empty, and that the percentage stays fairly constant, so that as the total number of containers shipped each year increases, so does the number of empties.

Experts argue that if we calculate the CO2 emissions of a 40-foot empty unit repositioned from Algeciras, Spain to Shanghai, China, the result is around 328 kg per container in only one leg. In addition, normal movement within a port generates about 6 kg of CO2 per TEU (20-foot equivalent unit). And then here are these millions of units of containers that are moving across the globe generating huge quantities of CO2 on an annual basis. Thus there is an urgent need to find a solution to reduce the volume of empty containers that are being moved around the world.

Shipping companies are not unaware that moving empty containers represents a significant cost, and terminals can also be affected. In 2014, for example, both Manila’s main container terminals suffered serious overcrowding of empty containers as the traffic congestion caused by the City of Manila’s short-lived ‘truck ban’ made shippers unwilling to use the limited time they could access the port to move empty containers.

Shipping companies, who have experienced this situation for many years, have adopted appropriate measures to minimize the impact this situation causes them by optimizing the way of repositioning empty equipment to areas where more containers are needed at the least possible cost. But shipping is not ruled by a mathematical algorithm. Sometimes the planned operation has to be adjusted due to external factors, or sometimes even due to an unexpected market change, thereby bidding farewell to cost optimization.Experts suggests that simply working to reduce movements rather than optimizing costs would lead to more flexible repositioning management, as well as making a serious impact on reducing greenhouse gases. Even a small reduction in container movements would make a difference, given the huge number of containers being moved each year—in 2014, more than 560 million.

With better optimization of empty repositioning, which can be managed through improved real-time tracking systems being developed, both costs and emissions could be significantly lowered. If main shipping actors could reduce empty movements by 30 percent, there would be a saving of 145.8 million kg of CO2 per year.

Chairman’s Message

T S Kaladharan

Being able to share some good news invariably makes us happy. After months of hard work from my colleagues, CSS has started its services from Qatar and Oman. This is a great and proud event for all of us at CSS, not least, because this achievement is the result of collective effort by all our staff and stake holders.  This is a truly justified reason for all of us to be happy.
It’s is true that significant moments aren’t just about opening new offices or even having a new presence. An occasion becomes noteworthy because it inaugurates the beginning of another success story. With a continued belief in ourselves, hard work and a commitment to our future, we can be sure that our efforts will not go unnoticed in these new regions of the Middle East.
I never forget my roots and an ability to take farsighted decisions based on our abilities and ethics.  CSS was founded in 1995 and has grown to become a reputed name in the freight forwarding and logistics businesses, throughout the Middle East and Indian subcontinent. To achieve this success, at certain points of growth, critical decision taking was required. When the business forecasts demands a change in your existing pattern, it is better to switch over to a more convenient form of progress rather than to try and rectify the current one. My experiences underscore my belief that to hold back a decision, because of uncertainty, is a crime which cannot be pardoned.
We are at an historic CSS landmark because we have taken a decision to commence CSS services provision, utilising our infrastructure and highly experienced staff, in Oman and Qatar. I am confident that this step, involving as it does two major economic power centres in the Middle East, will prove to be the right decision at the right time. I still get the same excitement, when taking decisions, as it did way back in 1995. This current decision equally excites me and I happily anticipate success for us all at CSS and our stake holders.

Qatar has proved to be one of the strongest Middle East economies and business power centers in the recent past. The country is rich in gas and oil reserves, ranking it third on the list of the world’s biggest gas reserves. Qatar has quickly become a huge economic hub as a result of the Emir’s directives of fully utilizing the gas and oil resources of the country for the welfare of its citizens, by means of integrated processes of oil and gas exploration and industrialization.

Transport upgrades are leading construction industry growth in Qatar, following rapid expansion and billions of dollars’ worth of new contracts awarded in recent years. The 2022 FIFA World Cup has created an impetus to finish a number of critical transport projects on time, including thousands of kilometers of road and expressway upgrades and construction, the new Hamad Port and a major three-part rail programme. Expansion of the recently opened Hamad International Airport (HIA) also advanced in 2015 when authorities released detailed designs for the next phase of construction, which will nearly double existing capacity – a welcome upgrade, given that the airport is already operating above capacity. Under the broader Qatar National Vision 2030 (QNV 2030) development plan, these projects will pave the way for future growth across all sectors of the economy, reducing bottlenecks and traffic congestion, improving trade and investment opportunities, and supporting ongoing efforts to diversify the economy.

Ships and Shipbuilding

Phoenician Vessels

The most able shipbuilders of ancient times were those of Phoenicia, about 2000 BC, who constructed not only merchant vessels capable of carrying large cargoes, but also warships larger and more effective than any built by their contemporaries, the Egyptians and the Aegeans. The Phoenicians’ most significant contribution was the round boat—a broad-beamed ship that depended principally on sails rather than oars and provided a much larger cargo-space than the narrow galleys. Phoenician round ships travelled the Mediterranean and beyond: to Britain (for trade in tin), and probably far south along the African coast.

Phoenician shipbuilders are also credited with developing bireme and trireme galleys, in which the oars were arranged in two or three banks. Multi-banked galleys are a matter of scholarly dispute. Some authorities, who doubt that the quinqueremes of the Greeks and Romans actually had five banks of oars, suggest that the term means merely that five rowers were assigned to an oar.

Oman has a terrain encompassing desert, riverbed oases and long coastlines on the Persian (Arabian) Gulf, Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman. Oman has modest oil reserves, ranking 25th globally. Nevertheless, in 2010 the UNDP ranked Oman as the most improved nation in the world in terms of development during the preceding 40 years. A significant portion of its economy is tourism and trade of fish, dates, and certain agricultural produce. This sets it apart from its neighbors’ solely oil-dependent economy. Oman is categorized as a high-income economy and ranks as the 74th most peaceful country in the world according to the Global Peace Index.
Oman continues to capitalise on its geographical position, increasingly establishing itself as a major transshipment centre for traffic between Europe, Africa and Asia with ongoing development and expansion plans at various ports in the sultanate, particularly at Duqm where a new port and dry-dock are being developed. Coordinating this maritime-based growth with land and air-side growth is also under way, with the 2011-15 five-year development plan earmarking $15.5bn for the national rail project; $6.2bn for airport expansion; and $3.1bn for road network development. Plans to connect the national railway project with the GCC-wide rail network will boost integration in the region, while airport and road expansions will solidify Oman’s growing reputation as a logistics hub and encourage the sultanate’s growing tourism sector.
