CSS Abu Dhabi Wins Onam Pookkalam Contest

Onam is reminiscent of Kerala’s agrarian past; the harvest festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (Aug – Sep) and marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali who Malayalees consider as their King.

As part of its celebration, CSS Group organized an interoffice “Pookkalam” competition.  The floral carpet, known as ‘Pookkalam’, is made out of the gathered blossoms with several varieties of flowers of differing tints pinched up into little pieces to create an intricate design. It is considered a work of art as it requires a delicate touch and a highly artistic sense of tone and blending.

The event was organized by Chandrakala (CK), Manager Operations – Ocean Freight, CSS, and was considered a tremendous success as members of CSS Group offices worldwide started preparing weeks before the celebration of Onam, by gathering supplies and finalising designs. “The competitive team spirit of the offices globally was truly showcased during the course of the competition and the artistic talents of the staff highlighted, as the designs that were sent across to the group of selected judges were truly outstanding. Unfortunately there could only be one winner, which was the CSS Abu Dhabi office,” added Chandrakala.

The Mahabali’s Crystal Award trophy was presented to the CSS Abu Dhabi office at a recently held gathering at The Club in Abu Dhabi on September 27th, 2013.

Celebrating 40 Years of Port Development

This year – 2012, marks an important milestone. The journey that began at Port Rashid in the early days of the UAE has seen Dubai emerge as a major maritime, logistics and trade hub. The far – sighted vision of His Highness Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum drove the development of Port Rashid. When the Port commenced operations in 1972, it was the largest Sea Port in the Middle East – the region’s first modern container terminal with 2 gantry cranes.

A mere 7 years later, Jebel Ali Port opened as the largest man – made harbour in the world visible to the naked eye from space.  Competitors initially, the two ports merged in 1991 to form Dubai Ports Authority (DPA), their throughput crossed 1 million TEU. DP World was formed in 2005 with the integration of DPA and Dubai Ports International (DPI). Today, DP World is the third largest marine terminal operator in the world, operating more than 60 terminals. Jebel Ali remains their flagship and the inspiration for their operations around the world.

Jebel Ali Port is an important growth engine and catalyst to the economic diversification plans of the nation. With world class infrastructure, modern technology and a customer centric approach our operations at Jebel Ali Port are geared to add value to your business and increase efficiencies to your supply chain. We pride in our roots and our terminals in the Port of Jebel Ali, Port Rashid, Hamriya Fujairah act as the region’s premier gateways for container, general cargo, cruise and ferry traffic, handling passengers and cargo with the utmost care.

It is from these humble beginnings, strong foundations and a culture of excellence which has skilled them to be able to handle more than 125 million TEU till date within the UAE.

Port Rashid is today the regional cruise hub. DP World is committed to expand the cruise terminal to be able to handle more passengers and vessels. It has also been recently confirmed that Port Rashid will become the permanent home of the Queen Elizabeth II cruise liner and a maritime museum will be developed. Their history is coming around a full circle – in the beginning they contributed to the development and economic diversification of Dubai and in enhancing the quality of life of the residents.

THIRANOTTAM, a fraternity of art-lovers of the traditional art forms of Kerala, is a not-for-profit organization formed and functioning for the promotion of these art forms and the artistes. Thiranottam’s purpose and activities are to increase awareness and comprehension of classical performing arts of Kerala by conducting appreciation sessions, organizing stage shows of renowned professional artistes and providing a platform for the young and promising talents.

The curtain has been lifted on the 4-day cultural festival Utsavam’11, the fifth in its series, which has been showcasing the traditional and rich, classical arts of Kerala in UAE from 2007 onwards.  The Indian Consul General, His Excellency Sanjay Verma, and Padma Shree Kalamandalam Gopi, the eminent Kathakali artiste, and Padma Shree Mattannoor Shankarankutty Maraar, the virtuoso chenda player, inaugurated the event on 4th November 2011. It showcased more and more classical art forms from the realms of Natya Sastra (Science of Acting) to the UAE audience. With Koodiyaattom and Kathakali being the flag bearers of this Indian Science, Thiranottam thought it appropriate to coin the term International Koodiyaattam and Kathakali Festival (IKKF). Utsavam ’11 was grander than its predecessors, with greater emphasis on Taalam and Layam. World-renowned Chenda celebrity Padma Shri Mattannoor Sankaran Kutty has kindly consented to set the right tempo for this year’s festival. Apart from Thayampaka, the four-day event showcased various art forms like Koodiyaattam, Keli, Purappadu, Melappadam and Kathakali.

Onam@CSS

Onam, known as the harvest festival in Kerala, which is celebrated in the month of Chingam, where Malayalees across the world celebrate with their family making ‘Sadya’ and engaging in different plays as part of the festival. As always CSS Group celebrated Onam in the traditional way in various network offices where most of the staff wore traditional attire.

Onam

Onam is the largest festival in the Indian state of Kerala. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar which is Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Maveli. The festival lasts for ten days and is linked to many elements of Kerala’s culture and tradition. Intricate flower carpets, elaborate banquet lunch, snake boat races, Puli Kali, and the Kaikottikkali dance all play a part in the festival. It can be undoubtedly said that these elements constitute the diversity, richness and colorfulness that no other festival can claim in the world.

Onam is an ancient festival which still survives in the modern times. Kerala’s rice harvest festival and the festival of rain flowers which fell on the Malayalam month of Chingam celebrated the annual visit from the under world (Pathalam) of the very noble Demon King Maveli (Mahabali). Onam is unique since King Maveli is revered by people of Kerala from prehistory.

According to the legend, Kerala witnessed its golden era during the reign of King Mahabali. Everybody in the state was happy and prosperous and the king was highly regarded by his subjects. He was that much highly regarded among the subjects that even the Gods under Indra became jealous of Mahabali, they approached Mahavishnu claiming that Mahabali is now equivalent to an Indra. Since a world with two Indras represents imbalance, Mahavishnu assumed the form of a dwarf, the Vamana avatara and tricked him to Pathalam, the Underworld. However, as Mahabali is equal to an Indra, he is to wait until the next Yuga where he would be the Indra. In the meantime, with the grace of Mahavishnu, Mahabali visits his people on an annual basis. Mahavishnu serves Mahabali as a gatekeeper in the world of Pathalam as the Lord himself serves his greatest devotees.

The most important things about Onam are the onakkodi, the new clothes worn on this day and onam sadya, a feast which is quite elaborate. This is usually a feast served on banana leaves and serves rice along with an array of 18 to 32 dishes. Traditional pickles and papadam are also served. Dessert is usually ‘payasam’, a sweet dish made of milk, sugar and other traditional Indian savories.

One can assume this way too as this could be the only day that around 40 million people around the globe eat the same food with Joy and Happiness.

CSS Group Wishes you a wonderful Onam.
