DP World Hosts Conference to Facilitate Trade Along Kazakhstan’s ‘New Silk Way’

CONFERENCE EXPLORES NEW LOGISTICS OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRADE BETWEEN ASIA AND EUROPE

Global marine terminal operator DP World has recently hosted a conference at the Mövenpick Hotel Ibn Battuta Gate – Dubai, aimed at fostering partnerships to facilitate increased trade between Asia and Europe along the “New Silk Way” through Kazakhstan.

The conference was supported by H.E. Askar Mamin, President of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), Kazakhstan’s national railway company, and attendees included KTZ Vice President Kanat Alpysbayev, senior Dubai trade officials and representatives from multinational corporations from the automotive and IT industry, with conference sessions attended by customs, logistics, trade and infrastructure experts. In attendance from CSS Group was Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development and Amith Horra, Marketing Manager.

The purpose of the conference was to discuss best-practice solutions for increasing trade flows along the “New Silk Way’ – the overland rail transport route that links China, Russia’s Far East and Europe via Kazakhstan. Its aim was to share the developments and new opportunities emerging on Silk routes including the establishment of the Kazakh Chinese gateway Khorgos, which is an influential trading hub for distribution between China and Europe.

DP World Group CEO Mohammed Sharaf welcomed attendees to the conference saying: “With the shift of manufacturing to central and western Chinese cities, far from the traditional sea ports that have taken Chinese made goods around the world, the New Silk Way across Kazakhstan has enormous potential to link China and the west mainly by land, and particularly by rail.” In November 2013, DP World and KTZ signed an agreement that will see DP World provide management advisory services for the development of the Khorgos Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Inland Container Depot (ICD). DP World will also provide similar services under a separate contract at the Port of Aktau, Kazakhstan’s main cargo and bulk terminal on the Caspian Sea.

“On behalf of the CSS Group, we are pleased to thank DP World for organizing such an informative conference; whereby we were able to gain insights into the strategic development plans of DP World, KTZ and the New Silk Way,” added Ken Dinnadge.

Speakers in the conference included senior management from DP World, Kazakhstan Railway & logistic company, Kazakhstan Customs, Russian UTLC, Chinese Lianyungang Port Group, Hewlett Packard and Toyota Tsusho Corporation. They shared their vision and the details of significant investments being made in the development of silk route and Khorgos SEZ.

The team was able to network with the buyers and sellers at the auction while promoting its first class logistical solutions to the end user. The next RBA auction in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is scheduled for December 17 & 18, 2013. CSS Group had a designated booth along with a meeting area whereby it was able to showcase its corporate materials. It even had a raffle for all visitors who attended. Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development,  Amith Horra, Marketing Manager, and Thushara Nishaman, Business Development Manager, represented CSS Group at the 2 day auction.

Ken Dinnadge added, “Being present at the auction was vital for CSS Group as we were able to network with potential and existing clients, while providing on the spot assistance for shipping various types of equipment, including construction machinery, transporting drill rigs, relocating a drag line, repositioning military equipment, exporting generators or simply moving large sized equipment. We are pleased to be associated with Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers and would like to take this opportunity and congratulate the entire team on yet another successful auction held in the United Arab Emirates.”

Established in 1963 in Canada, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers operates at more than 40 auction sites throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Middle East.  The company sells, through unreserved auctions, a broad range of used and unused equipment including equipment utilized in the construction, transportation, mining, forestry, petroleum, marine and agricultural industries. Ritchie Bros. is a public company; its common shares trade on both the New York and Toronto stock exchanges under the ticker symbol RBA.

“Providing innovative business solutions that enable the world’s businesses to exchange equipment with ease and confidence has been our company’s mission since our inception,” said Steve Barritt, Regional Manager, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. “Our attention to detail and our constant endeavor to provide value added services to our customers has been the cornerstone of our success. All of our innovative services that have been launched are evidence of how we’ve run our business for over 50 years, which is keeping our customers’ needs in mind.”

Ritchie Bros. auctions are known for the ramp method, where customers are able to sit in a covered auction theatre while the mobile equipment is sold as it is driven over the ramp. Once the bidding has started, the sale price increases until there are no new bids. The auctioneer announces the item as SOLD. Then, the successful buyer holds up his number to identify himself, and the process begins all over again. Bidders can inspect the trucks and equipment at all auction facilities prior to the sale.

Strategically positioned and headquartered in Dubai UAE, CSS Group has become a name to reckon within its own field of knowledge and has created its own trademark and brand name when it comes to providing a complete customized new and used construction equipment shipping and logistics support services to manufacturers, distributors, auction houses and their associated clients when dealing with all types of new and used heavy construction equipment.  CSS’s ability to supply this demanding sector with innovative logistical solutions for new and used equipment is recognized throughout the world and they are considered as the prime option for most of the leading manufacturers.

Digging Deep With Largest Dredging Programme At Jebel Ali In 10 Years

DEEPER DRAUGHT ALLOWS THE PORT TO HANDLE LARGER NUMBER OF BIG VESSELS AT THE SAME TIME

DP World recently announced that it has successfully completed the largest dredging programme at its flagship Jebel Ali Port in 10 years, allowing the port to handle more big vessels at the same time by deepening the draught.

The dredging added to the expansion work currently underway, adding 1 million TEU of new capacity to Container Terminal 2 later this year and another 4 million TEU capacity Container Terminal 3 by 2014, once completed, will enable Jebel Ali Port to handle up to 10 of the next generation 18,000 TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units) mega vessels at the same time – the only port in the region able to do so.

In total, 477,000 cubic metres of soil have been dredged from 2900 metres of quay wall at the roll-on roll-off (roro) vehicle carrier terminal, the tanker terminal and three container berths. The dredging deepened the draught of the roro and tanker berths from -10.5 to -11.5 metres while container berths 14, 16 and 17 were extended from -14 to -16 metres.

H.E. Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, said:

“As the trade gateway for the United Arab Emirates, Middle East and the wider region, the capabilities of Jebel Ali are always reviewed to make sure they are in line with customers’ needs.  As more of our customers add larger vessels to their fleets, we have responded by deepening the berths to increase our efficiency as a key link in one of the busiest supply chains in the world.”

Yasser Zaghloul, Chief Executive Officer, National Marine Dredging Company, Abu Dhabi, said:

“We are delighted to work in partnership with DP World on this significant project which boosts the port infrastructure and facilities and enhances trade flow into Dubai, the Middle East and the wider region.”

Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:

“In response to customer demand, this project will enable Jebel Ali to meet their needs to handle more of the larger ships, providing the efficient and cost effective services they have come to rely on. Today, Jebel Ali Port is handling each week an average of three ultra-large container ships (ULCS) with a capacity of 14,000 TEU and above and we believe that number will increase steadily in the coming years.”

DP World worked with regulators in Dubai to comply with the relevant environmental legislation for the dredging project. Compliance measures included a full Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) carried out before the dredging works began.

The EIA assessed existing water quality, harbour sediments, air quality, terrestrial and marine ecology, noise levels, and hydrodynamic modeling. From these investigations, it was determined that the impact on the environment was short term and minor in nature including localised reduction of water quality within the harbour.  Among the positive benefits noted by the authorities were that sediments from the harbour floor identified for removal could be re-used in the ongoing reclamation of Jebel Ali Island to the North of Container Terminal 2 providing that the engineering quality of the soil was up to standard.

Jebel Ali Port’s Container Terminals are equipped with 22 berths and 78 cranes to cater to the world’s largest container vessels. With its 17 metre draught it can accommodate ships of any size. In January, DP World celebrated the maiden visit of the world’s largest containership, the 16,020 TEU CMA CGM Marco Polo, owned by the CMA CGM Group.

Earlier this year, DP World achieved a milestone in its history when its Dubai ports handled the 100 millionth container in ten years. Both Mina Rashid and Jebel Ali Port have handled 135 million TEU since the opening of Jebel Ali Port in 1979, around 75% of it (100 million TEU) was achieved between January 2003 and January 2013.

CSS, Peters & May-Yacht & Marine Logistics-Aboard The world’s Largest Containership

CSS was excited to be involved in a shipment that required the use of CMA CGM MV Marco Polo, the largest container ship in the explorer class owned by the CMA CGM Group. On 7th January, 2013 the CMA CGM MV Marco Polo became the largest containership in the world to call at Dubai’s Jebel Ali Port, measured by capacity it can hold 16,020 TEU’s.

“CSS Group was established to be involved in the first ever call of the world’s largest containership,” said CSS Group’s, VP Business Development, Ken Dinnadge. “We had three brand new yachts loaded on board from Southampton, UK for Princess Yachts customers here in the UAE and Qatar which had to be handled with care in order to be delivered in perfect condition.”

Whilst this was a complex operation that included Peters & May, the carrier, CMA CGM, CSS Group, Dubai Clearing and forwarding agent, DP World, the receiving port, the organization and commitment to customer satisfaction was showcased through the excellent teamwork and preplanning that was undertaken to ensure all went accordingly to plan.

Nishith Kothari, JSL Cargo stated “We truly appreciated the way the team worked, and the constant updates we received from your back office were extremely helpful. In short, we had a very good experience working with CSS, and I would like to thank you for giving us the pleasure of coming on board the world’s largest vessel.”

ABOUT THE MV MARCO POLO

Owned by French shipping company CMA CGM it began its first voyage as the world’s largest containership from Ningbo, China.

Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) in South Korea, the Marco Polo is an engineering masterpiece measuring 396 meters long, 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters. By the end of next year, two more of these will be delivered, all to be named after great explorers.

It shows the expertise of the group’s teams, who are able to handle not only the very technical piloting of the ship but also its commercial operations.

Their entire network of 400 agencies all around the world is active to ensure the successful launching of this ship.

ABOUT MALDIVES:
Country at a Glance

Maldives, officially the Republic of the Maldives and also referred to as the Maldive Islands, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls, orientated north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep, India) and the Chagos Archipelago. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometers (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometers (250 mi) south-west of India.

Maldives has deep blue seas, turquoise reefs, white sandy beaches and palm trees. It is also a place full of character, where its people have long spent their days languishing in the very essence of idyll living. Yacht and Marine Logistics

CSS’s Yacht and Marine Division was involved in a complex operation in receiving the discharge from hull to sea of a private yacht originating from Florida, USA to Dubai, UAE.

The yacht that was received was a Meridian 459 motor yacht with twin engines weighing over 14,000 kgs.

According to Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development, CSS said, “Sometimes not all operations go according to plan, we have to be ready with solutions at all times which as we all know happens on occasion in this business/industry.”

The eventual outcome in this instance, once again demonstrated CSS’s willingness to go above and beyond in order to ensure complete customer satisfaction.”

The scope of work concluded as the yacht was delivered to the water from the vessel; however we felt that the receiver would benefit from CSS’s local knowledge and expertise by organizing on their behalf a professional survey, dry-docking and some minor general maintenance for the yacht. This proactive approach resulted in the customer giving the green signal to go ahead and have CSS oversee the entire operation.

Customer Testimonial from Kosta Kathreptakis, Senior Operations, Specialist and Project Director, McDermott Middle East, Inc.

“A big thanks to the entire CSS team for having been fantastic throughout the shipment process. The professionalism and customer service demonstrated was phenomenal. Thanks again!”

Ken Dinnadge concluded by saying, “This business unit is all about working as a team and this something that we are extremely focused on at CSS. Once again this demonstrate CSS’s commitment to providing not only first class service on the ground support to a diverse customer base but also excellent customer services and after sales support as well. Its team-cohesiveness amongst all departments that results in total customer satisfaction.”
