UAE Ministry Of Foreign Affairs – DP World

Public – Private Counter Piracy Conference

An international conference was held in Dubai from April 18-19 at the prestigious Mina A’Salam, Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai under the patronage of his highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

The event brought together high-level government and industry leaders,  as well as recognized experts in the area of maritime security, information  systems, international law and economic development, to share experiences  and strategies and to identify compelling opportunities for multilateral action.  Piracy has an enormous financial and human cost and the problem is growing  in both scope and scale.  The counter-piracy conference aimed to broaden the  discussion, highlight key impediments to action and develop partnerships  between industry and governments to help create viable counter-piracy strategies.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DP World were pleased to invite the only freight forwarder CSS Group to this invitation only conference.  Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development attended this significant conference and he added, “CSS Group is highly honored and thankful to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and DP World for inviting us to attend this important conference. It was an excellent avenue to discuss the issues on hand with high-level delegates as well as to promote CSS Products and Services. It was truly an exceptional international conference and we look forward to attend more of the same in the near future.”

World ports & Trade Summit

The World Ports and Trade Summit 2011 was held from 28th – 30th of March at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The summit addressed the challenges, trends and opportunities emerging from the current macro-economic outlook to help provide a clearer picture of the industry’s recovery schedule. More than 40 international maritime business leaders and experts, including senior figures from international port associations, addressed delegates over the course of the three day World Ports and Trade Summit. Headline speakers from the Pan-Arab region included Captain Abdul Wahad Al Diwani of Abu Dhabi’s National Transport Authority, Captain Feisal Saad of Ras Laffan Port, Qatar and Tony Douglas, CEO, Abu Dhabi Ports Authority.

The World Ports and Trade Summit also featured an international exhibition, hosted tours of port facilities in the UAE in addition to an open question and answer session with the management team of Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, training workshops and a series of roundtables. Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development CSS Group participated in this summit to ensure that Consolidated Shipping Services and its products and services were presented to generate new business opportunities globally. According to Ken “Given the truly global nature of the industry, which increasingly relies upon unhindered international trade and standardized regulations, this conference catered to the full spectrum of marine industry stakeholders, from economists to terminal operators and shipping companies to cargo owners, freight forwarders and investors.”

Earth Hour At CSS Go Beyond An Hour

Across the world, every March 26, iconic landmarks turn off their lights and unnecessary electrical appliances between 8.30pm and 9.30pm in a mark of solidarity and as a call for action against global warming. CSS Group Offices across the world joined hands for this noble cause and switched off the lights and computers for one hour during their prescribed lunch hours making sure that it will not affect the operations whilst contributing to the Earth Hour. In addition to this we reinforced the thought to our employees mentioning the importance of the Earth Hour that it is not intended to just turn off the lights for one hour every year however; the initiative is intended to draw the attention of people and establishments so that they can work together for the benefit of themselves and their planet, and that everyone can make a difference.

Dubai residents and businesses achieved the highest energy savings and lowest carbon dioxide emissions in UAE to date during the 60-minute Earth Hour blackout on Saturday night. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority announced that in one hour Dubai beat its own Earth Hour record and saved 204,000 (kW/h) of electricity and reduced carbon emissions by 102,000kg. As an organization we are proud to say that we have done our part to make this global event a grand success at office as well employees showing their corporate social responsibility by switching of their lights at home.

It dates back….

2007 in Sydney, Australia: when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour.

2008, 50 million people across 35 countries/territories participating.

2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries/territories.

2010, the biggest Earth Hour ever. A record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action.

Marine Charity Ball

As part of the Whiteboard Auction at the 2011 Marine Charity Ball held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dubai, UAE on March 4th, CSS Group donated a limited edition Mont Blanc pen and an Airbus A380 aircraft model. Approximately AED 300,000 was raised for the various charities and this was due to the tremendous generosity of benefactors. It was a proud moment for CSS Group to be part of this event and contribution to this outstanding total.

The Kalikkalam – CSS UAE Open Badminton Tournament

FOOTBALL Tournament

On March 11th, 2011 the Etisalat Academy hosted the Nellara 7’s Football tournament. The event showcased 36 teams from the UAE representing different colleges and clubs in India.  The team representing SD College, Alappuzha, Kerala was sponsored by CSS Abu Dhabi, and it was with much joy that we watched it defeat the strongest teams in the tournament. Unfortunately, the final match which had all in attendance on the edges of their seats, ended in a penalty shoot out with the sponsored team losing. Dressed in CSS colors they were a true representative of CSS, its core values and its employees through the hard work and camaraderie that they showcased throughout the duration of the match.

Are You Green At Heart?

Words often take on different meanings depending on how, when and where they are used. I am reminded of the adjective “good”. Since my youth, “wicked”, and “bad” have all been used to mean good. Recently, on YouTube, I saw an international old time pop hit by Irish singer Feargal Sharkey entitled “A good heart these days is hard to find” and I wondered how I would update this song title. “Bad” or “Wicked” did not seem to fit the bill. However my answer soon sprung to mind. No longer should it be “a good heart” it should be “a green heart”.

All of us have been prompted to think and discuss green but do we do anything about it or do we just pay lip-service to it?

We take green for granted in the same way it is easy to take the good gestures of others for granted. But we ignore them at our peril because once we stop seeing good and green we have ceased to grow.

Green quotations are uplifting. For example ponder on these: –

“As long as you are green you are growing, as soon as you are ripe you are past your prime”. (Ray Kroc).

“For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver”. (Martin Luther).

Green obviously symbolizes, fertility, richness, cool and clear surroundings, where we are at one with nature. But where should we start this Green revolution drive?

If somebody asks me this question my answer would be… from the heart itself.

Our true good green hearts will have a beneficial impact both at work and at home. “Green fingers are an extension of a verdant heart”. (Russell Page).

In this positive sense, within our workplace environment, it means that you have brought in with you an aura of buoyant and cheerful energy. This is happening because you are glowing with the green shoots of life in your core – your heart. If you do not have this “green joy of life” in you then you will have a negative impact on all your colleagues. This is why, if we all think green, we will help motivate each other when we have occasional down days. This approach, even in hard times, gives us steadfast courage to look forward to the spring.

“The forest pine stays green in winter displaying wisdom in hardship”. (Norman Douglas).

In middle management a green heart mentality will bring stability, balance and optimism.
Transparency, openness, care, compassion and emotional control are all qualities which are focused within a green culture.

Interestingly the next line of Feargal Sharkey’s song underscores our need, even with green hearts, to understand we have to cherish our abilities in order to achieve success. Each of us is special. Each of us is unique. No two green buds on any plant are identical. This is why even with my new song title, I would still finish as the original was sung.

“A green heart these days is hard to find, so please be gentle with this heart of mine”.

I am sure if we are green, good and gentle we will be so much the better for it. Remember, “Nature’s first green is worth more than gold as it is the beginning of life”.

Cloud Computing

In ancient days one server or hardware is utilized for a single activity with a single operating system running on it; in most cases companies used to invest huge amount of money and utilize up to 50% or less of the total capacity of the hardware for that single process. The network administrators were forced to buy much such hardware for various activities. They were forced to buy minimal capacity hardware and later face the difficulty of upgrading to a higher version. Those days are gone with the introduction of cloud computing  which is simple and easy and enables you to utilize your hardware to its maximum with the use of virtualization.

What is Virtualization: Virtualization means creating logical systems inside a single hardware, for example you may have one windows operating system and one Linux operating system in a single hardware.

Cloud computing is an internet based computing which shares application, resource, infrastructure or data with the help of virtualization. The main advantage of cloud computing is its minimal cost and hassle free maintenance, availability of world class technological software in very low cost. There are many companies now support cloud computing like the NEC. Recently SAP and NEC had come up with a comprehensive solution on SAP ERP for its customers. Oracle also gives powerful cloud services in many forms such as platform, software, infrastructure etc. Microsoft’s Cloud Power is another platform for cloud computing which invites enterprises to avail their awesome services. Others in this stream are Google, Amazon, Salesforce.com, RightScale, Cisco, Rackspace and Dell

From this technological advancement its evident that in the future cloud computing will lead the businesses; regardless of the business size and can be availed and standardized its operations with leading ERP systems from Oracle, Microsoft, SAP etc.

CSS Clothing Drive 2011

On March 1st 2011, CSS initiated the first ever Clothing drive as part of the CSR activities within the organization. Homeless people and low income families need all types of gently used clothing, particularly warm clothes and coats for cold weather, formal clothes (to attend job interviews), and shoes (which frequently wear out). It’s helpful if donated clothing is clean and reasonably wrinkle-free. A clothes drive is a fun way to make it easier for would-be donors to make a difference, particularly if you live in a multi-resident building, work at a large office, or belong to a civic club, church, temple or mosque. Our employees brought those clothes that they don’t wear anymore and we plan to donate to them to the Dubai Charity Center a non-profit organization and to the Japan Consulate Dubai- Relief Efforts for the recent tragedy, which occurred in Japan. Remember, one person’s used clothing is another person’s treasure

Chairman’s Message

At CSS we have always taken care to research meticulously the details and data which are needed for new programmes and systems to be incorporated within our company.  This has to happen before any attempts are made to integrate new services or structures because, without this, any implementation is doomed to failure. Within the corporate world we have seen many ambitious projects being abandoned half way, which brings a huge loss within society.  Our commitment, to always demand diligent research, has held us in good stead. As we face the future there needs to be a fool proof engagement of system study, for any campaign, in order to ensure success. We can be proud of our progressive approaches which have benefited our company and society.

In my Lighthouse message one year ago, I highlighted how we needed to ensure a greener earth for future generations. No doubt you will join with me in feeling pleasure that our “Go Green” campaign has been most effective. Our efforts, like sponsoring 500 trees in Sri Lanka, have achieved welcome audits and plaudits from many quarters. It is this approach, to our social responsibility, that has brought in success for team CSS and every one behind this campaign deserves accolades.

What makes CSS Group unique is our humane approach. We are humbled, and at the same time proud, by the dedication of Our People, Our Associates and Our Partners that have made us a solid conglomerate. As a key stake-holder in CSS Group, I look forward to making every single moment of your association with our organization a memorable one.

Global Shipping And Logistic Services

Heavy new and used equipment requires special shipping considerations due its size and weight. Shipping all types of cargoes such as bulldozers, cranes, trucks, plant equipment, project cargoes and other heavy industrial machinery requires a specialized Freight and Logistics service provider. CSS Group is now focusing on providing various types of global Logistics solutions so that shippers and receivers can receive a dedicated competitive professional service which will enable all parties involved to focus on the actual buying and selling or the projects they require the actual equipment to be used for.  The first step in shipping heavy equipment is to have accurate cargo details such as dimensions and weight for the actual ocean carrier or transporter so that a competitive quote can be provided. This type of information can help the vessel owner or operator via CSS determine the actual type of service required and if any special considerations need to be made. CSS Group has the experience, dedicated professionals and first class knowledge globally that enables us to focus on this specialized sector of the market.

Our dedicated team always consults and works with our clients for the respective cargo specs as well as specialist transporters in order to obtain all requisite information regarding equipment or cargo dimensions and weight.

Once these have been determined the CSS Group then consider the various transport and shipping requirements and options. Equipment may require specialized transport and ocean freight options, whether the cargo may require a special trailers and handling CSS can arrange transport and shipping even though some cargoes present challenges. CSS carefully researches your options and chooses those that will work best for you.

Heavy equipment transport and ocean freight can be a difficult task, therefore it is important to choose a company that specializes in this arena such as CSS. Working with an experienced freight and logistics provider helps take some of the guesswork out of the entire shipping process, while working directly with a logistics provider such as CSS allows its customers to be more involved in the entire process and can often result in more personalized service.

Before the day of the actual move, CSS works closely with its customers in order to prepare and take necessary steps to make sure that all cargo and equipment will arrive safely. CSS is prepared for any adverse conditions it may encounter in the whole process. When clients need to make special preparations for overweight or oversized equipment CSS always deliver.

When purchasing logistic services CSS makes sure a clear scope of work is defined and the client knows what the actual scope of work covers and how to make sure shipping heavy equipment does not have to be such a heavy burden.

Top Tips While Buying Used Equipments Are:

  • Do seek references for the seller from someone you know who has dealt with them before.

  • Do physically inspect the equipment before you buy it – make sure that the correct type of serial number plate is fixed correctly to the chassis and that it has not been interfered with.

  • Don’t purchase from ‘dodgy’ places such as pub car parks, lay-bys or service stations.

  • Do view and buy it from the company or home address of the seller.

  • Do be suspicious of recently re-sprayed equipment.

  • Do check the ignition has not been damaged.

  • Do look for any previous owner decals – if you find any, call them to make sure they have sold it.

  • Do ask for any documentation – receipts, service history, V5 etc.

  • Do request a company receipt which includes the seller’s full address and VAT number.

  • Do the inspection done from an authorized body before you buy it – and do so when you are standing next to it.

  • Do insist on seeing the Check certificate if you are buying from a dealer or auction.

  • Don’t pay cash.

  • Do be suspicious if the sale price is less than the current market value.

  • Do walk away if you have any doubts.

“The CSS Group employees are highly skilled with a wealth of experience and knowledge in handling the shipping of various types and sizes of breakbulk equipments and machineries. Also due to the extensive network of agents worldwide we can proudly say, “when time matters we matter”.

Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers

Cargo On The Move From India To Dubai VIA CSS

CSS Group was recently appointed to secure a suitable vessel to load and ship a large shipment of 777 Caterpillar machines ex Mumbai to Jebel Ali (BREAKBULK) on behalf of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. Due to the cargo being time sensitive,  the cargo was required in Jebel Ali for a major auction. It had to be completely  dismantled, trucked from Hyderabad to Mumbai in order to meet a specialized CSS Chartered vessel at Mumbai port. This encompassed a considerable amount of preparation work to secure the right vessel tonnage, on behalf of our client, capable of being able to accommodate 777 Machines, which are some of Caterpillar’s largest dump trucks. Also CSS executed the complete coordination with the suppliers for the transportation across India as well as export documentation, the port, the police, the border crossings and then the actual vessel loading.  This was done with the help of CSS India offices and coordinated the entire project out of head office in Dubai.

The vessel was sourced and secured through reputable brokers and all relevant subcontractors were pre approved by the CSS Group in order to ensure that physical transportation was handled and the actual vessel loading. The CSS Group Team right from the Chairman to the Senior Management oversaw all infinite details in each and every step in order for Ritchie Bros to focus on the auction aspects as opposed to the actual shipping aspect. This was done through the specialist CSS Project Division which is now rapidly becoming one among a few project forwarders who is specializing in the international movement of heavy machinery using their own regional offices combined with our international partners. In fact moving heavy machinery across the world is what CSS Group do well i.e. shipping new and used mining machinery, construction earth moving equipment, cranes, plant equipment/machines exploration and drilling equipment as well as agricultural machinery, every day of every week. Whether you are shipping a Caterpillar dozer, a Hitachi excavator, a Komatsu dump truck or a Tadano crane, the very experienced crew of projects department knows exactly what is required to transport your heavy equipment in the safest and most economical shipping configuration.

CSS Group maintains an extensive technical database with machinery specifications of nearly all major earthmoving, construction and mining plant and equipment. This means our customers don’t have the hassle of having to provide technical drawings or machinery spec’s whenever they are shipping machinery internationally. The operations crew of CSS boasts average industry experience exceeding 20 years per person.  A third of the crew has more than 25 years experience, much of that time directly involved with shipping heavy equipment using scheduled RORO Services specialized break bulk and container vessels  and dedicated charters for larger parcels.

Whether it’s CSS Group or one of the competitors, we strongly recommend using heavy lift specialists when moving your valuable heavy machinery and other challenging cargoes, internationally.

For any enquiries about shipping various types of equipment, construction machinery and all types o f earth moving machines, transporting drill rigs, relocating a drag line, decommissioning a mine, relocating a manufacturing plant, repositioning military equipment, importing farm machinery, exporting generators or simply moving very big things the crew at CSS Group will always consider it as pleasure and great opportunity to handle this with utmost care. CSS Group is your service provider in this sector Door to Door worldwide.

Please send in enquiries to infoprojects@cssdubai.com.

CSS – Leading By Example

“Going Green” has evolved as “The Talk of the town” in corporate circles since a couple of years. “Preserving the Nature”, “Protecting Future” are some of the metaphors we come across on a daily basis. But a million dollar question still hangs on: Who is going to do it? We at Consolidated Shipping Group have joined hands with a green fraternity with a notion that the real future is not tomorrow. It is now, which motivates us to take our small steps with a confidence that it can make a big difference in the near future.  In this regard CSS Group is planning to implement certain environmentally friendly practices across the organization and also participating in global events like World Environmental Day, Earth Hour as well as regional activities.

Companies have tremendous strengths; they have extremely capable people, technology, access to money and the ability of geographical reach thus corporates are important stakeholders in society. Since its inception, CSS has been actively participating in CSR activities as part of the corporate ethics program and in 2011, we as a responsible group of corporates came up with an initiative of a Clothing Drive which is planned for the month of March 2011 for all the CSS offices in the UAE.

According to our Chairman, T.S. Kaladharan “Ethics is the new competitive environment and we were and will always look forward to the Triple Bottom Line of Business– People, Planet and Profit.”

Perfect Start Info the New Year For CSS And Peters & May

With the alliance with Peters & May, CSS had created a new business opportunity in the Yacht and Marine Logistics sector which has been highly beneficial. In the beginning of this year the CSS Group was assigned the responsibility of full door to door service of a Luxury Tecnomar Nadara 24 Yacht from Genoa, Italy to Jebel Ali. The yacht weighing almost 70 Tonnes and 25 meters in length was imported by the local Tecnomar dealer. CSS was appointed to coordinate the delivery from the factory up to Genoa, export clearance, supervision of the loading and providing a cradle for the yacht and ship it to Jebel Ali. A team of three loadmasters was appointed by Peters & May/ CSS and worked hard under the supervision of Rouben Brosen, General Manger of Yacht & Marine Logistics who made sure that the boat was delivered to the customer’s hands in a perfect condition. Apart from that Peters & May and CSS were involved in the export of several tender boats and containers for BMW Oracle and Emirates Team New Zealand on their appearance in 2010 AC Louis Vuitton Cup held in Dubai. During the month of January, Peters & May and CSS have handled the shipment and clearance of more than 12 yachts and boats are looking forward to an exponential increase in the volume of business due to the upcoming boat shows in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The new Moody 45 Sailing Yacht that arrived straight out of the Hanse Factory in Germany, was shipped, cleared and delivered as an all in one package for the local customer, thanks to the combined effort of Peters & May Germany and Peters & May Middle East/CSS Group.
