Running For A Reason -Mumbai Marathon 2013

CSS India Director Jairam KR Completes The Half Marathon

It has indeed been rightly said that “A Marathon Is More than Just a Race” and the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon too echoes this statement. The race is not just about crossing the finish line and winning thousands of dollars as prize money. It is in fact an event that is driven by passion and purity of purpose. The Mumbai Marathon is an annual international road running competition over the marathon distance that is held in Mumbai, India, each January.

15th February, 2004 is an important date in India’s distance running calendar. It marks the day when Standard Chartered Mumbai International Marathon made its debut, thereby catapulting India onto the world league of distance running events.

Celebrating a decade of distance running, the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 is among the elite class of full marathons to have been awarded the Gold Label Status by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). It is a great celebration of spirit and fitness that underlines and showcases the passion zeal of the citizens of a city, and nowhere is it more visible than in the spirit of giving that accompanies all great city marathons. Today every major city in India has a city marathon but Mumbai stands above other cities in the largeness in its heart and the caring power of its society. Corporate entities and citizens compete amongst themselves by participating in this event for the upliftment of the under privileged.

As a part of the Corporate Social Responsibility and show of solidarity towards a great cause CSS India Director Jairam KR had participated in SCMM and successfully finished the Half Marathon (21.097 KM) in 2 hours and 36 minutes. It was a proud moment for CSS Group as they got real representation in this event.

For the SCMM 2013 the international event ambassador was Haile Gebrselassie, winner of two Olympic Gold Medals, four World Championship Gold medals, four World Indoor Championship Gold medals and has 27 World records to his credit. . The event ambassador was Bollywood actor John Abraham who has been the face of many brands and several causes. But few are as close to his heart as the Mumbai Marathon.

Marathons around the world have been known for their strong bonding with charitable causes. Key to the success of this partnership that seeks to raise funds for deserving causes is strong participation from the corporate sector. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon has earned the distinction of being one of the most elite platforms in India for such causes. The SCMM is India’s single largest fundraiser and the runners rose more than Rs 17 Crore for charity, taking the total amount to Rs 80 crore since the marathon started way back in 2004.The SCMM has earned the distinction of being the most successful fund raising platform for charities in India and Celebrated a decade in distance running events. The Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2013 got a record with 222 NGOs participation and around 40,000 people – from businessmen to actors, doctors to dabbawallas, VIPs to the plain enthusiast – turned out for the 10th Mumbai marathon, proving once again that it is one of the most glamorous and widely participated sporting events in the country.

Lucky Winner

As part of our continuous commitment to the freight forwarding fraternity, CSS initiated a thank you scheme over 5 years ago, whereby one lucky name out of the scores of business cards that are dropped into the raffle bowls placed at the D/O counter at the CSS Corporate Office and CSLC-1 in Jebel Ali will be rewarded with a gift.
The winner picked selected and rewarded for the months of November- December 2012 was Arumugam from Globe Trekkers LLC who walked away with gift vouchers worth 200 AED from Lulu, presented by Fida Asghar, Team Manager, NVOCC, CSS Dubai.

Chairman’s Message

It gladdens my heart being able to wish you all, a great year ahead. A New Year provides an opportune time for us to thank all our friends, agents, associates and well wishers; who have stood with us in the ups and downs over the past twelve months. Whatever achievements we have made are because of the trust they have shown in us. I have seen some remarkable progress in the workmanship and confidence level of our own staff. We have made the communication stream clearer than ever, with our wonderful Lighthouse and websites. The enthusiasm shown by our sales team really warrants outstanding appreciation. I know they will emulate my own aspirations and dream big and act bigger in the coming year. Some wonderful strides were also taken by our IT team as they have developed innovative concepts which will be implemented soon. The guidance and leadership shown by our senior management team was truly remarkable. In summary, throughout CSS, we have seen great teamwork. Let us hope to achieve greater heights with our continuing enthusiastic efforts.
For this New Year, I would like to share a notion which I recently read. It’s all about keeping your own diary of events. Does this sound too simple? But if you ponder on this concept, you will come to realise that it really matters and will make a difference. Keep a diary and note events, both personal and professional. Whenever you feel something is worth writing down then just do that. At the end of each week, month and eventually the year, read what you have written. You will then be able to analyse what you have done and chart where you have reached in terms of achieving your goals. Such an assessment will sharpen your focus and enable you to be more targeted in the year ahead. Try this out in 2013, and experience some extra magic in 2014.

Strategy Is A Commodity & Execution Is An Art

In economics, a commodity is the generic term for any marketable item produced to satisfy wants or needs. Therefore how can strategy, an intangible object be considered a commodity?

In today’s market a company’s strategy is equivalent to a trade secret that gives companies an edge over its other competitors. But unlike tangible commodities that just require to be sold in order to define its success, a company’s strategy has to be carefully thought through and executed to ensure that the end result is a successful one.

It cannot be recalled, fixed, nor refunded, for this reason senior management can spend months or often a year to define the strategy of its company going forward. The execution of said strategy is as important as its developments, because it is the execution and its results that will serve as the company’s success story.

CSS proudly concluded its Annual Sales Strategy Meet 2012 at the prestigious Amethyst Resort in Passikudah, Sri Lanka. Amethyst Resort is the first property built, owned and operated by Amethyst Leisure (Pvt) Limited, whose journey began in 2011 with the laying of the first foundation for Amethyst Resort in Passikudah, Sri Lanka. By March 2012 the resort commenced its operations as one of the first and unique locations for holidaymakers in Passikudah.

Currently the resort has 40 rooms in operation, fully equipped with all amenities to offer the ultimate hi-tech getaway.

The three-day meeting was held from November 15th to the 18th, 2012 and was attended by the CSS Senior Management and Head of Departments from the Middle East and overseas guests, Oliver Hahn from IFS Doha and Suranga, Zainudeen, and Zuraish from Maldives.

The department heads gave presentations about the achievements and sales activities for the year 2012 and proposed ideas and strategies for the upcoming year 2013. With a core purpose of analyzing market trends, and business prospects, the sales meet gives an accurate platform for the different departments to discuss and share valuable business viewpoints, which helps in the future development of the company. There were breakout sessions with team building activities, which helped the attendees to take a break and also socialize as different groups.

CSS Projects, Oil & Energy Takes on a Heavy Load

Recently the CSS open yard in Jebel Ali, UAE received a substantial cargo volume of 3000 CBM which included SGC compressors and accessories which were received at Jebel Ali Port and moved to CSS’ yard for storage. They received three 120 tonnes SGC compressors on 10 axle hydraulic trailers, which were offloaded onto the ground using cranes. In addition they also received 15 other over-sized and heavy pieces for movement which was loaded onto heavy duty low bed trailers for offloading at the CSS open yard.

Sreenath V, Senior General Manager, Project’s Oil & Energy/Operations added, “The whole project was handled with extreme professionalism from start to finish, and allowed for CSS to showcase its continuous commitment to its clients to provide the highest quality of service.”

The entire operational team was present on site to ensure that the client’s needs were not only met, but their expectations exceeded.

Diverter Damper Blanking Plates

CSS Sales Team Jebel Ali along with CSS Projects, Oil and Energy division effectively handled all logistical requirements for the movement of Diverter Damper Blanking Plates. The Diverter Damper Blanking Plates originated from the shippers yard in Hamriyah Free Zone to Hamriyah Port then onwards by barge to Taweelah Port, Abu Dhabi to the final destination site.

The volume of this precious, time sensitive project cargo transported was over 5500 CBM and its transportation was done by hydraulic trailers and barge.

In spite of the various complexities that were faced during the entire operation including severe weather conditions i.e.: dense fog; specialized staff from the division were on site to ensure the smooth execution of the project and the client was extremely pleased with the service delivered by the CSS Projects Team right from inception to execution of the project.

Coordination, time management and dedicated teamwork between all departments ensured the shipment was achieved as per schedule while ensuring maximum client satisfaction.

Yacht and Marine Logistics

CSS’s Yacht and Marine Division was involved in a complex operation in receiving the discharge from hull to sea of a private yacht originating from Florida, USA to Dubai, UAE.

The yacht that was received was a Meridian 459 motor yacht with twin engines weighing over 14,000 kgs.

According to Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development, CSS said, “Sometimes not all operations go according to plan, we have to be ready with solutions at all times which as we all know happens on occasion in this business/industry.”

The eventual outcome in this instance, once again demonstrated CSS’s willingness to go above and beyond in order to ensure complete customer satisfaction.”

The scope of work concluded as the yacht was delivered to the water from the vessel; however we felt that the receiver would benefit from CSS’s local knowledge and expertise by organizing on their behalf a professional survey, dry-docking and some minor general maintenance for the yacht. This proactive approach resulted in the customer giving the green signal to go ahead and have CSS oversee the entire operation.

Customer Testimonial from Kosta Kathreptakis, Senior Operations, Specialist and Project Director, McDermott Middle East, Inc.

“A big thanks to the entire CSS team for having been fantastic throughout the shipment process. The professionalism and customer service demonstrated was phenomenal. Thanks again!”

Ken Dinnadge concluded by saying, “This business unit is all about working as a team and this something that we are extremely focused on at CSS. Once again this demonstrate CSS’s commitment to providing not only first class service on the ground support to a diverse customer base but also excellent customer services and after sales support as well. Its team-cohesiveness amongst all departments that results in total customer satisfaction.”

Capacity Expansion at Jebel Ali Port

DP World is integral to the economic development and the progress of Dubai and the UAE. We continue to position Jebel Ali Port as the gateway port of choice to handle cargo destined for the Middle East, India and Africa regions.

In 2011, we saw a 12 percent YOY increase in volume with a record throughput of 13 million TEU.  The port has unparalleled connectivity with over 170 shipping lines, 98 weekly services to over 115 direct ports of call and delivers our customers a high level of efficiency.

As the largest and busiest container port in the region, Jebel Ali port is the preferred port of call for major global ship operators, who continue to order ultra large container ships (ULCS) in line with current liner trends.

We embarked on the expansion of our current Terminal 2 as well as the development of new Terminal 3. Work commenced on Terminal 2 in February this year, scope of this expansion is to extend the quay by   400 m; this would increase quay length in Terminal 2 from 2.6 kms to 3 kms (an additional of 400 m) which will take the container handling capacity at Terminal 2, from five million TEU to six million TEU by May 2013.

With this, Terminal 2 will be able to consecutively handle seven of the largest container ships currently sailing the ocean.

As it stands today, progress had been made to demolish the existing breakwater, piling or foundation works for both STS* and RMG** are currently underway. The Quay wall work is ahead of schedule and over 80 percent of the underwater blocks are already in position.

DP World has also embarked on building a new container terminal at Jebel Ali Port – Terminal 3.

Terminal 3 will be one of the finest modern marine terminals in the world with a quay length of 1,860 metres, a draught of 17 metres, and a 70 hectare storage yard.  When operations commence at the new terminal in 2014, total capacity at Jebel Ali will reach 19 million TEU.

The infrastructure at the new terminal will include the deepening of the channel depth to accommodate the next generation of container ships with a capacity of 18,000 TEU.

DP World, UAE Region has already signed agreements with local and international companies for the supply of 19 Ship to Shore (STS) quay cranes and 50 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes for this development. These quayside and gantry cranes will be equipped with sophisticated technology and are designed to deliver peak productivity and efficiency for our shipping lines.

DP World is the third largest marine terminal operator in the world, with 10% of the world market share in container handling.  We remain committed to continuing to meet the needs of the region’s growing markets and will continue to invest in line with market demands. Our expansion plans will further strengthen Flagship facility, Jebel Ali Port’s position as the most efficient and modern gateway for cargo in the region and enhance its role as an economic growth engine.

ABOUT THE NGO-
KOLOGH NABA
Kologh Naba» means «close to the chief» and is also the name of a small village which is part of the bigger village of Saaba, situated about 12 km ( 7.5 miles) east of Ouagadougou – the capital of Burkina Faso in West Africa. Founded by Else Traerup in 2001 and officially registered (granted non-profit status) in 2003, Kologh Naba currently involves  almost sixty Burkinabé members and has support groups in Europe.  The objective of “Kologh Naba” is to improve the living conditions of its members through vocational trainings offered to  the members during the winter months: sewing, weaving, soap making, carpentry, masonry and gardening. During the remaining months of the year, trainings are reduced because members must prioritize agriculture labor (sowing, weeding, harvesting, etc.).
