Why are Brilliant Ideas Rejected?

If you would like to play the game, try to work out the answer to the following question before carrying on to read the answer.

What have the following books and authors got in common?

“Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” – J.K. Rowling.
“Watership Down” – Richard Adams.
“The Jungle Book” – Rudyard Kipling.
“The Hunt for Red October”- Tom Clancy.

The answer:- All the books and authors were rejected by publishers, not once, but several times. Harry Potter went unrecognised by numerous publishers including Penguin, who also initially turned down Richard Adam’s classic along with some 13 other publishers. Likewise Rudyard Kipling and Tom Clancy initially suffered the same fate.

Brilliant ideas are often rejected in all walks of life. Some of the reasons for being turned down, with the benefit of hindsight, give us all an opportunity to laugh at what appears to be ridiculously naïve assessments of the ideas.

A United Kingdom Member of Parliament, Mr. Scott-Montague MP, is on the record in 1903 as saying; “I do not believe the introduction of motor-cars will ever affect the riding of horses.”

Just as funny is Western Union’s internal memo in 1876; “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication. The device is inherently of no value to us.”

No doubt music lovers will like this one? “Guitar music is finished, it will not last.” – Dick Rowe, talent head at Decca Records UK, turning down “The Beatles” though to his credit he later signed up “The Rolling Stones”.

So why is it innovative ideas are thrown aside? The first thing to consider is where the person was when the idea originated. Usually ones, that are initially rejected, start their life with a lone creator. Maybe, like many others, you find your favourite place to have new ideas is when taking a shower. Albert Einstein said that he had his best ideas when either shaving or washing. The second consideration is what causes ideas to spring into our minds. With showering it is said that it’s the ritual of cleansing, flushing away grime, and the fact that showering wakes you up so spurring our creativity. Add to this mix a popular opinion, that it is the noise of the water flowing which stimulates your mind, and it becomes easy to understand why showering turns out to be the most favoured place for ideas. The more scientific amongst our readers may prefer the explanation that it is a dopamine high, relaxed state and distracted mind which a shower generates which makes for our great ideas originating in the shower.

However this very popular location has one quality which is both an advantage and also a draw-back. You are on your own. As a creator you are free to think without interruptions but also you are not able to share your thoughts with others until later. It seems that most ideas, which are initially rejected, are not presented as part of a team effort. With the aid of a team, one is able to present and focus a body of opinion when presenting the idea. Equally one has to make sure that your presentation is aimed at someone who understands what you are talking about. This is not as easy as it sounds especially in today’s culture of specialisation. A new idea often “breaks the mold” so someone, who has a specialised focus, may not be able to comprehend what to you, as the inventor, seems obvious.

So to increase your chances of having your idea recognised:

1) Try and convince your team – get them on your side.
2) Target and know to whom you are making your pitch.
3)  Keep it simple.
4) Have an unmoveable belief in yourself.

This forth requirement is the most important attribute to have, which is why I have left it to the last, as it underpins everything else. “Belief” is an inherent characteristic which is clearly demonstrated by everyone who eventually succeeds after rejection. They have a belief in themselves and their invention which means that they NEVER give up. It is a sacrosanct requisite that everyone with an idea, who wishes to “hit the jackpot”, must never waver from having total belief in themselves, a belief which transcends all obstacles. A rejection is just another step on the road to success.
This brings to mind that I have just written a book about the adventures of a magical talking elephant, “The enchanting adventures of Abul Kandula.” I have not sent it to anyone yet. Shall I send it to you to be rejected? –

ABOUT MALDIVES:
Country at a Glance

Maldives, officially the Republic of the Maldives and also referred to as the Maldive Islands, is an island nation in the Indian Ocean consisting of a double chain of twenty-six atolls, orientated north-south, that lie between Minicoy Island (the southernmost part of Lakshadweep, India) and the Chagos Archipelago. The chains stand in the Laccadive Sea, about 700 kilometers (430 mi) south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometers (250 mi) south-west of India.

Maldives has deep blue seas, turquoise reefs, white sandy beaches and palm trees. It is also a place full of character, where its people have long spent their days languishing in the very essence of idyll living. While it is the perfect place to sit on a beach and watch a sunset with a cocktail balanced on your hand, it is also a geographical marvel, knowing that there are thousands of fish swimming around the vivid corals just a few feet away from where you sit.

DP World Marks Handling Of 100M Containers In 10 Years

CSS Vice President Business Development, Ken Dinnadge was invited to celebrate a milestone with DP World Senior Management whereby they achieved 100 Million TEUs handled.

Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, DP World UAE Region, Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Vice Chairman, DP World, Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World and Ken Dinnadge, VP Business Development CSS.

DP World celebrated a milestone achievement in its history when its Dubai ports handled the 100 millionth container to pass through UAE Region terminals in ten years on February 4th, 2013.

DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said, “The feat was made possible by the high level of support the company has received from Dubai’s leadership, loyal customers, stakeholders and committed employees.”

The 100 million TEU record was achieved between January 2003 and January 2013 and covers all container boxes handled in both Mina Rashid and Jebel Ali Port. DP World, UAE Region’s annual container throughput increased more than 150 per cent over the decade, from around five million TEU in 2003 to 13.3 million TEU in 2012.

In all, the two container ports have handled 135 million TEU since the opening of Jebel Ali Port in 1979, around 75 per cent of it since 2003.

In a recognition of the crucial roles they have played in DP World’s success story, members of the DP World Alumni Network were invited as special guests to celebrations at Jebel Ali Port where the Chairman unveiled a container box painted in company colours, in the presence of senior officials, including Vice Chairman Jamal Majid Bin Thaniah, Group Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Sharaf, and Senior Vice President and Managing Director of DP World, UAE Region Mohammed Al Muallem – all of whom have played pivotal leadership roles in the company’s emergence as the third largest global marine terminal operator.

Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, said: “DP World owes its success to the vision and support of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. Our flagship facility Jebel Ali is counted among the crown jewels of Dubai’s economy. We remain committed to supporting Dubai’s unparalleled position as the region’s commercial hub.

CSS Group was also represented during this landmark moment by Ken Dinnadge VP Business Development, as part of the DP World Alumni invited to this exclusive event. During his tenure at DP World Ken was part of the first commercial team that set DP World on its way to achieving its first million TEUs. Ken Dinnadge said, “The growth of DP World serves as a lesson for ports worldwide, as its success is owed to the vision of the country’s leaders and the Chairman of DP World. On behalf of CSS Group, I would like to congratulate DP World on achieving this tremendous milestone and wish them further success and growth in the future.”

The expansion work currently underway at Jebel Ali includes adding 1 million TEU in new capacity to Container Terminal 2 (T2) during the first half of this year and the development of a 4 million TEU capacity mega Container Terminal 3 (T3) by 2014. When the expansion work is complete, Jebel Ali Port will be able to handle ten of the next generation 18,000 TEU mega vessels at the same time – the only port in the region able to do so.

For well over a year now, DP World, UAE Region has been handling volumes of more than 1 million TEU every month. In 2012 DP World, UAE region handled 13.3 million TEU.
