Celebrating International Yoga Day

CSS GROUP ORGANIZES YOGA SESSION TO THEIR EMPLOYEES

CSS Group observed the International Yoga day by conducting a Yoga session led by Mr. Rohitaksha, Yoga master from Arya Yoga. The programme was organized at the CSS Head Quarters in Jebel Ali. Interested people from amongst the different departments of the company attended the session.
The United Arab Emirates celebrated the International Yoga day with various events across the country. Thousands of residents from the Indian community participated in yoga sessions at Umm Al Emarat Park in Abu Dhabi on Thursday evening to mark the 5th International Day of Yoga.
The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi hosted Yoga Day celebrations at the park from 7pm onwards on Thursday evening. Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Tolerance, inaugurated the event who was the chief guest at the function along with Charge d’Affaires of the mission, Smita Pant.
Yoga has been around for centuries (originating from India thousands of years ago) and is attributed to connecting the mind and soul. In the fast-paced world that we live in these days, more and more people are turning to yoga and meditation to clear the mind – plus it’s a brilliant workout too.

Kabayan weekly Re-launch

DP WORLD TO OPERATE PORTS ALONG RUSSIA’S NORTHERN SEA ROUTE

DP WORLD TO RUN PORTS THAT RUSSIA PLANS TO BUILD ALONG THE NORTHERN SEA ROUTE IN THE ARCTIC TO SHORTEN SHIPPING TIMES BETWEEN THE EAST AND WEST.


The Russian Direct Investment Fund – being an investment fund of the Russian Federation, investing together with foreign investors in Russian assets; ROSATOM – the infrastructure operator of the NSR; Norilsk Nickel – the world leader in the production of palladium and high-quality nickel, and DP World – one of the largest global port and logistics operators have agreed to jointly implement a project for the integrated development of the NSR.

The quadrilateral agreement of intent was signed on June 6, 2019 during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The agreement outlines a comprehensive piece of work which will study of the most effective commercial options for the use of the Northern Sea Route. The parties intend to create a strategic partnership in the form of a joint venture for the development of transit cargo traffic through the NSR.

The key objective of the project is to increase the volume of freight traffic through the NSR and the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation. The document was signed by Dmitriyev Kirill Alexandrovich, Director General of the RDPI Management Company, Vladimir Potanin, President of Norilsk Nickel, Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Rosatom, and His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World (DPW) For the first stage, the parties to the agreement will have to develop a strategy to increase the efficiency of the use of the NSR and to determine ways of developing transit traffic.

The focus will be on linear transportation of containers and other bulk cargo along the Northern Sea Route. It will be necessary to determine the amount of funding for the design and construction of an additional ice-class fleet and icebreakers, as well as the port infrastructure. A separate important area of work: ensuring industrial safety and environmental protection in the implementation of transportation along the NSR.

The project partners are all world-renowned experts in their field of competence. The Russian Direct Investment Fund has many significant opportunities to attract foreign capital in the largest investment projects in the Russian Federation. ROSATOM is the authorized infrastructure operator of the Northern Sea Route and the owner of the world’s only nuclear icebreaking fleet. “Norilsk Nickel”, whose production facilities are located in the Far North, have many years of experience and knowledge in the field of logistics passing through the NSR.

The company provides cargo transportation not only for its own needs, but is a key participant in the “northern delivery” in the Arctic region of the country. DP World is one of the world’s largest and recognized global port operators and a leader in global digital supply chain solutions that specializes in freight logistics, terminal services and freight services.

His Excellency, Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said, “DP World is uniquely positioned to help drive the development of the NSR. We are excited about the possibilities and the benefits this will bring not only to the Russian economy, but to customers in Asia and Europe. Our expertise in developing new Ports, infrastructure and innovative new supply chain solutions, are key factors in our successes over the last few decades. We see enormous potential in NSR and look forward to creating new successes with our partners”

The parties agreed to establish a joint working group to conduct an analysis and prepare a feasibility study for the project within six months. Subject to this work being completed a next stage decision will be made on the further development of the project. “Norilsk Nickel is one of the pioneers in the development of the Arctic, a company with unique experience in operating the Northern Sea Route. We will share it for the further development of this unique route”, noted Vladimir Potanin.

See Life from a Different Angle

The business of freight forwarding is a truly international one. Not just do we ship goods from numerous countries, but our industry allows us to travel to new countries, embracing new cultures, and eating new types of food. Or sometimes we are at our desk interacting with colleagues from other places that we may not meet but whom we deal with on a regular basis. Our clients and colleagues are just as unique as the countries they are from, and it is important for us to know who they really are. The world is global, and it’s increasingly harder to navigate. To help us, we need to look at things from a different angle.

Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and all the available technologies have been fantastic at allowing us to be in contact with the world in an instant. We are emailing each other hundreds of times, talking to each other often on the phone during conference or individual calls, and exchanging many texts, but do we really know who is on the other side?

The interpersonal relationships we build with clients and colleagues is an important one. In today’s international work environment, this relationship building becomes more complex. Our clients and colleagues are unique and we need to recognize this and take time to learn about them. When talking to a colleague or client from another country, take a chance to ask how their daily commute is, how long it takes, which mode of transportation they are using, how challenging it might be. Ask them about their main holidays, their rituals, or anything you would like to know. Take the time to simply ask how are they are doing today. Listen to their replies. These conversations written or spoken will help you to better understand the country and the people you are dealing with every single day and this effort will go a long way in building better relationships with each other.

If you travel to or even have meetings in your home country with people from Egypt or the Middle East in general you need to know you should not shake hands with a woman and you will often kiss a man on the cheek to say hello. Egyptians love to negotiate and a meeting can become very colorful as both parties try to get the best deal. If you are offered a drink you should never refuse; they are likely to be offended and you may lose the opportunity to close a deal. Do not show the bottom of your shoes when you sit down to talk to someone as it is a huge sign of disrespect. After the meeting, when your counterpart walks you to the door or the elevator, take this as a really good sign – it is one of respect and means the meeting went really well.

If you travel to India you will quickly learn that a meeting can take a long time as there is a ritual you must respect if you are looking to close the deal. Sometimes your first sight will be many pairs of shoes sitting outside an office. Do not ignore this, as it means the host wants you to take your shoes off prior to coming in. It is a sign of respect based on his religious beliefs. Once in, it is common to make small talk. Then talk about what brings you there. Refreshments and snacks are next, and do not say no! Most of the time you will have to use your hands instead of utensils when you eat. Do not be offended, wash your hands and do the best you can. Finally the meeting will conclude resuming what was discussed and what action and follow up shall be taken. Follow this simple protocol and you are certain to be appreciated for it.

When dealing with people from France, be aware of a few things prior to engaging in a negotiation. French people in general have a tendency to say “no,” right off the bat, requiring you to move the “no” to a “yes” if possible. You must prove yourself. Do not be discouraged and keep introducing your services and be passionate in what you believe. French and Europeans in general are very loyal so if you succeed to convince your eventual new customer or colleague you will keep him for a long time. Lunch is a religion in France so do not hesitate to invite your interlocutor. This gesture can go a long way to gain the respect of your future or current client.

Every country, region, and city in the world have their own traditions and rituals, and it is impossible to learn them all. But, it is important in our business to try to understand our clients and colleagues the best we can, as any effort you make will be noticed and appreciated. You will see your relationships and partnerships with your colleagues, vendors or customers strengthen. Be curious, ask questions, be respectful, be knowledgeable about your business, and educate yourself about them. Knowing our clients and colleagues from a different angle is extremely important and you will be rewarded for trying more you can imagine.

Every man dies; but not every man really lives!

Before the battle of Stirling bridge (11th sept,1297), William Wallace, who was leading the Scots, gave a powerful speech to motivate his soldiers. A few words from his speech are as quoted below – “We all end up dead, it’s just a question of how and why. Every man dies, not every man really lives. I am William Wallace! And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You’ve come to fight as free men…….and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?”
As a matter of fact, these words demand attention by each one of us, as we are also supposed to fight at every moment in life, with challenges, problem, people around us, and also with ourselves! The point of concern in this 24×7 battle is- whether we end up dead or alive? Every time when allow negativity, fear, hatred, jealousy, anger, greed etc. to take hold on us, we are rendered as dead! However, when we are brimming with positivity, enthusiasm, courage, confidence, etc. while combating such battles, we come out alive! Verily, in this choice lies our real freedom. Yes, we are the sole decision- makers for our lives, to choose life or death for our existence.
No one wants to be the person that dies without living. So, people must find something that gives their life meaning, whether it’s being a great friend, sibling, parent, grandparent, teacher, neighbor, etc. Once people have found something to live for, they’ll live better. If it’s not relationships as a central purpose, maybe its occupation or something that is outside work that makes a difference to others. The meaning of life is something people have to decide for themselves.
That’s one facet regarding life, which focuses on our existence. Howerver, there is another aspect as well, which is ingrained with our existence, and that is, growth. In this context, it is worth mentioning the words of Martin Luther, which he said aloud on April 9, 1967: “And there are three dimensions of any complete life……length, breadth, and height.” Well, these dimensions primarily relate to our inner growth (as an individual); our outer growth (success in the outside world); and our contribution towards the society on the path of awakening as shown by the enlightened Masters of the time.
Just give a pause to the crazy race that you are engaged in every moment of your life. Check, which dimension is missing from life. On a sincere contemplation, you will find that the fundamental and underlying commonality in all the three dimensions is “Soul-awakening.” Why? It is because when we are awake at the level of our soul, we are best able to understand and explore the real meaning of the three dimensions, i.e. developing as a ‘truly civilized, moral, and wise ‘being; aiming at success in a confident and prudent manner; and, cherishing the joy in the life of selfless service, rather than constricting it in the parenthesis of I, me and myself .

RENNEL ISLAND OIL SPILL AN OVERVIEW

Rennell Island, one of the country’s outlying islands in its southern Rennell and Bellona Province, is geographically remote with little infrastructure and few services. The Solomon Islands is part of the marine biodiversity-rich Coral Triangle and has one of the world’s most important coral reef systems, home to 485 coral species and 1,019 fish species.

On February 5 2019, a Hong Kong-based bulk carrier, the MV Solomon Trader, ran aground off a remote island in the Solomon Islands. It spilled heavy fuel across coastal waters, beaches and a sensitive coral reef system not far from a UNESCO World Heritage Site., eventually spilling more than a hundred tonnes of heavy fuel oil into the ocean.

The country’s president has described it as the worst man-made environmental disaster in recent times. Although the International salvage crews has now contained the oil spill, a massive clean up operation is still underway following which questions of liability and damages is also put forward. However, the scale of damage is still being reckoned. Scientists report that oil spills can kill fish and invertebrates directly, while toxic compounds can curtail coral growth and reproduction and diminish coral and fish biodiversity.

In the latest twist of events the Indonesian miner Bintan Mining Corporation, which chartered the stricken MV Solomon Trader, is suing the ship’s owner King Trader Ltd. And says they were suing the shipping company as the charterer on behalf of the people of the island.

The Rennell islanders were having a hard time availing consumable water and has thence been relying on clean water shipments. The Solomon Islands Maritime Safety administration acting director Jonah Mitau said the government is looking at changes to the Shipping Act following the incident. He said currently the laws only cover safety but will be extended to cover insurance and commercial responsibility for damages.

Reports suggested the damage is estimated to be over $US50 million and the Solomon’s caretaker Prime Minister Rick Hou has confirmed that a review of environmental and mining laws is needed to deal with such emergencies.

The World Heritage Centre is determined to support Solomon Islands and Australia in exploring all options to hold the responsible company, owners and insurers to account.

What is an Oil spill? It is basically when large quantity of liquid petroleum hydrocarbon is released into the water bodies. Oil wastes that enter the ocean comes from various sources. These spills mainly occur due to human activities in coastal areas, shores and oceans, more specifically, the activities involving tankers carrying crude oil, drilling rigs, wells and offshore platforms. These oil spills have adverse ill effects on the ocean and the life in the ocean, which can last for decades. The largest oil spill occurred in 1991, in Gulf of Mexico, in which around 240 million gallons of crude oil was spilled. The oil spilled in this accident went deep into the sea, burrowing up to 40cm in the sand and mudflats, it remains there to this day. This is only one example of how oil spills can be such a menace. In the year 2018 alone, six incidents of oil spill occurred, three large oil spills and three medium oil spills. The oil spill at Solomon Islands leaked 600 tonnes of heavy fuel oil, which implies that it is a medium oil spill. Even though it is a medium spill, it cannot be taken lightly, because it has occurred in one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites, which also happens to be the world’s largest raised coral atoll. The spill is likely to cause long term significant damage to the coral reefs and the local ecosystem. When the corals come in contact with the oil, it can sometimes kill it directly or effect its reproduction and growth. The International Maritime Organisation is a United Nations specialised agency which focuses on the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. IMO plays an important role in promoting the Sustainable Development Goals of the UN. The IMO regulates principles that can be used in situations like these.

WHO IS TOO PROFESSIONAL?

Recently we heard about someone, we’ll call Alex for the purposes of this article, who was told by a successful chief executive, that they had been held back in the promotion stakes because they were seen as being ‘too professional’. This tale prompted the Kaleidoscope team to consider what ‘being professional’ and ‘too professional’ was all about. Eventually we came to a conclusion, you might regard, as being one which is not generally considered.

We agreed that being professional at work is essential if you wish to be a success. Consequently, we first considered, from an employee’s viewpoint, what ‘being professional’ might mean. Simply put the definition of ‘professional’ is actually a person who is engaged in a specific activity as a main paid occupation. However, being professional frequently means different things to each of us. For some it means having advanced qualifications, degrees or industry certification. For others it might mean doing a good job or being smartly dressed at work. Consequently, what is actually required to be professional can be difficult to pin down. On the flip side the requirements of a successful company, to portray themselves as being corporately professional, is well known. Such a company generates a perception of dependability, respectability, reliability, dedication and most importantly trust.

We soon realised that professionalism has two facets in the business world. There’s one for the individual worker and another demanded by a company to achieve an overall corporate image. Both these distinct entities are clearly and closely inter-related. Without achieving a high standard in the former it becomes, more or less, impossible to attain the latter. Accordingly, we focused firstly on what a worker needs to do to be classed as professional.

‘Professionalism’ isn’t about what you are wearing or the fact your hair is perfectly coiffed. Indeed, one leading UK executive, of a stock exchanged listed company, was known to chair meetings wearing a cowboy hat with boots to match! Using big or posh words, when you talk, also has nothing to do with being professional. Indeed, an individual focusing on these issues may mean that they come across as too professional. Interestingly we didn’t believe this was the implication of the ‘too professional’ accusation levelled at Alex. Image, personality and a team spirit are important, particularly when working as a dedicated group. Nevertheless, an individual’s professionalism will depend on how others assess them and not on their own judgement. Those believing they need to be somehow super professional could alienate them, as colleagues may feel that they cannot easily interact with them.

So, our bottom line is: –
Dress well so as to be comfortable.
Be yourself.
Make sure you enjoy your work.
Keep your qualifications to yourself because no one needs certificates waved in their faces.

But what drives an employee’s environment? It’s the need of a company to achieve a professional accolade in order to be successful. This is where, we believe Alex fell down. He failed to realise that, in focusing 100% on the needs of the company, he overlooked the different perceptions of professionalism amongst staff. Invariably a company sets out their objectives and targets on the basis that management are convinced they are credible and achievable. In doing so, they believe success will be assured as customers will appreciate dealing with a business that delivers.

But what happens when things don’t progress as visualised? This is when the ‘trouble-shooter’ is often brought in to identify the problems. Over his career this is the position for which Alex was noted. He was so professional, to a point, that all that mattered was focusing on what the company needed to achieve success. There’s nothing wrong in this you might say, but do you recall the saying,

‘No matter how qualified, a poor workman always blames their tools’?

Without occasional self-checking we may all fall into such a trap. When things go wrong, we mitigate our insufficiency by passing the blame to someone or something else. Alex’s role as a trouble shooter was to get to the heart of a problem, identify where such instances were happening and determine a solution. In this context Alex was ‘too professional’ because it meant challenging others on their professionalism. This required a tricky balancing skill to keep everyone happy.

Alex’s situation underscored the meaning of professionalism and its interplay between employee and company. This led us to conclude, rather uniquely it seems, that being professional means owning what you have done, by accepting full responsibility for your actions.

True professionals will never pass the buck!

Famous quotes stand the test of time because they are proved to be true. In this context ‘Life begins where fear ends’ is an esteemed maxim by Gautama Buddha, later interpreted by many spiritual and philosophical leaders. In today’s corporate world, where progress is determined by targeted objectives, quotes like this have gained greater relevance because the burdens on one’s emotional and mental well-being are increased.

Fear is one of our primary emotions. It is something which is natural and instinctive. From an evolutionary perspective fear may save our lives but it can also stop us from living the way we desire. Reacting spontaneously, with a fear-or-flight response, when coming across a venomous snake is one thing. However, fear creeping into our psyche, almost by stealth, is another. Being fearful, when there is no obvious reason, means we become reluctant to step outside our own comfort zone. Examining our life situation and assessing our potential makes for a more focused individual. It invariably helps us gain courage to expand our horizons and look at life in a different perspective.

My greatest worry is that the new generation, who have lots of opportunities around them for professional growth; appear to be faltering owing to lack of self-motivation. Irrational fear is holding some back. Running after motivational gurus is counterproductive because meaningful motivation can only be invoked within oneself. Recognising the fear factor, that is waiting subtly in the background of our minds, enables us to rise above its influence. Putting our fear into a proper perspective means our life really does begin. We will then have the confidence to step outside our comfort zone and grasp new opportunities with enthusiasm.

EXPLORING OPPORTUNITIES

BUDGET AND STRATEGY DISCUSSED AT THE CSS INDIA MEET

CSS India Strategy and Budget Meet was successfully concluded recently. The meeting was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Kochi from the 15th to 16th March 2019. Station heads and key decision makers from within the group company attended the meeting along with the CSS India Vice Presidents. The welcome address was done by Rahat Talreja, Vice President CSS Central India, wherein he opened up a discussion on the changes happening in the global economic scenario and the possibilities for CSS India in the coming few months.

Followed by Rahat, CSS Delhi did the presentation. CSS North India Vice President, Rajesh Arora in his remarks re-iterated the need for more close coordination of all the branches for providing flawless services in the entire Sub-continent. For the first time, CSS Colombo also made their presence at the CSS India Meet in Kochi. Ms. Menusha, General Manager, represented Colombo.

Detailed discussions were made on all aspects of export and import services. In her remarks, CSS Group COO for NVOCC, Chandrakala (CK) pointed out the need for more effective use of the IT platform, especially the CRM related activities for creating more transparency in the CSS service offerings.

Midhun George, Asst. General Manager CSS Abu Dhabi attended the two day meet and interacted with all the participants. Special thrust was given to certain network associates and their importance in his presentation as well, by Midhun.

Day two witnessed presentations from Chennai, Tirupur, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Ludhiana and Colombo offices. Closing remarks were made by The CSS Group Chairman T S Kaladharan. He focused on bringing in more combined efforts from all offices for effective utilization of the resources and maximize profits. At the same time, he urged the group members to be more particular in the personalization of services to create a long-standing relationship with the customers.

The first evening dinner was organised at the pool side venue of Crowne plaza. The second evening was organised at the historic Fort Kochi area. All participants travelled to Fort Kochi, Hotel Fragrant Nature. The Dinner was accompanied with a Gazal performance by acclaimed singer Janardhan Athri. It was an enjoyable evening with the mesmerizing musical performance as well as the Dinner.

CSS Qatar team rolled out the red carpet to welcome guests from the shipping fraternity, for an event exclusively organised by Console Shipping Services in Doha. The event which was named CSS EVE 2019 was organised, providing opportunity to meet, greet and interact with all the partners who stood in supporting CSS Qatar from the very first day of its inception in Doha.

The networking dinner was well attended by the members of the Shipping fraternity. CSS Group attended the 3rd annual partnership meeting of the Neptune Cargo Network. The first and the biggest Global NVOCC and LCL Cargo Alliance, Neptune Cargo Network has successfully brought more than 230 sea freight consolidators & LCL forwarders from across the globe under one roof in a 4-day conference being held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Manila, Philippines on February 25 to 28, 2019. NEW HIGH BAY CONTAINER STORAGE SYSTEM LAUNCHED AS “BOXBAY”

Introducing a new and intelligent High Bay Storage system that will transform the way containers are handled at ports.

Dubai/Dusseldorf, 17 April 2019: A new international joint venture that aims to change the way that containers are handled in ports has been launched by global trade enabler DP World and industrial engineering specialists, SMS Group.

“BOXBAY” represents a new and intelligent High Bay Storage (HBS) system that will be ready in time for the Dubai Expo 2020 with a pilot project scheduled at Jebel Ali Terminal 4.

The patented design and rack structure of the system creates unique advantages with containers stored up to eleven stories high, delivering the capacity of a conventional terminal in a third of the surface area.

CSS Group attended the SCLG annual networking and dinner in Dubai. This year the event was organised at the Sobha Hartland. MBR City, Ball room.

The networking dinner was attended by Ajay Krishnan Chief Operating Officer, Freight forwarding CSS Group and Rosh Manoli, General Manager, Sales & Marketing CSS Dubai. The networking event was a gathering of supply chain management professionals from across various industries. It included manufacturers and MNC’s who have a presence in this region. The event was very good as it was a platform for knowledge sharing and information on key trends in the supply chain industry. More than 110 industry professionals from around 70 organizations attended the function.

With his demise, we lost a great friend who stood with us in our ups and downs” mentioned Kala in his message.

A brief profile on Mr. Lalit Sharma

With very humble beginnings with his law degree in his hand, Mr. Sharma’s arrival to Dubai was a very unexpected one. Landed in Dubai Mr Sharma started his career as an accountant in a construction company. But soon he has to look for another job due to many unforeseen misfortunes. His next assignment was with a Freight forwarding company where he not only looked after the accounts, but was extremely engaged with the core trade as well. His impeccable skills in PR and communications supported his growth to a great extent.

Founded in 1997, the eponymous company, Lalit Freight Services, had a rich client base, mainly consisting of Mr. Lalit’s friends who were impressed with his work ethics, and the ability to negotiate and obtain the best rates for them. As in any business, there were ups and downs, but Lalit Freight Services continued to thrive and cater to the client’s needs with utmost dedication.

Mr. Lalit Sharma worked round the clock to run a business that is his legacy.

Mathematics is, in large part, the search & study of patterns and for the explanations as to why those patterns exist. We will see the use of these patterns in day to day life.

Example: Patterns in motion of planets led to theory of gravitation or patterns in genomes help in curing disease.

Lets start the math with the universe of Whole Numbers:

When you add up the odd number sequence you get the square number sequence

Example 2: Counting numbers and square numbers are related

How?

When you add up the counting numbers sequence to a point N and back to 1 , you get the square numbers sequence.

Now lets see the Hemachandra number series : (Hemachandra (1150 AD) number series also written by Gopala ( 1135 AD ) also known as Fibonacci( 1200 AD))

Write down 1 and 2

The next number is the sum of the previous two numbers

1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,……..

Formula: Hn= H (n-1) + H ( n-2)

So which is the 7th number in the series , look up and count , its 21. and so on.

Where is it applied ?

Hemachandra numbers in Sanskrit Poetry :

Poetry has 2 syllables – Long ( 2 beats) And Short ( 1 beat)

The number of ways you can fill up 8 beats:

Long Long Long Long = 2+ 2+2+2 = 8

(Short Short ) X 4 = 8

Short Long long Short Long = 1+2+2+1+2 = 8

So answer to the question that in how many ways can you fill up 8 beats , see the 8th number in the Hemachandra sequence : answer is 34.

Hemachandra numbers in Nature:

a) Daisies ( flower) have 13 , 21, 34 petals – all Hemachandra numbers

b) Pine Cones have 8,13,21,24 etc spirals – again all in the Hemachandra numbers series

Now , lets evaluate some others mathematical concepts.

Prime Numbers

2,3,5,7,11,13,17,…….

Prime numbers have only two factors , 1 and itself

You cannot have two numbers multiplied to get that number – that is a prime number.

So lets see for example the number 13 = 1X13 = 13 = two factors only , 1 and 13.

But these prime numbers were discovered way before humans by nature.

You know Cicadas ? These are insects ( bugs)

Cicadas live underground and emerge only once every N years , where N tends to be a prime number like 13 or 17

Why ?

The hypothesis is that then N is least likely to be a multiple of the length of the predators population cycle which could kill them off.

Indian Cicadas come out every 7 years and some every 19 years

In America , they come out every 13 years and 17 years.

It was observed that those coming out in years other than prime numbers were predated and lost their lives so this pattern has become common that they come out only in prime number years , based on their predators life cycle!!

Prime numbers in everyday life

Suppose you have two 200 digit prime numbers

Give them a computer , and it can multiply them in a fraction of a second and give the answer which will be a 400 digit answer.

Now take this 400 digit answer and give it another computer , and ask to find the original two 200 digit prime numbers.

The best known algorithms , working on all the worlds computers , would still take billions of years to find those two 200 digit prime numbers !!!!

Which means A multiply by B = C – here finding C is very easy A XB but to reverse find the factors A and B which result in C is impossible !

So basis this , it is easy to multiply two large prime numbers but hard to do the reverse process , is the basis of the world’s encryption !!!!

Often when we submit private information on the internet , prime numbers are what are being used to encrypt the information and protect it since no one knows how to find factor numbers ( or so we think ) this method of encryption is presumably secure !

The thesis is that it is difficult to go backwards and find the factor or find a quick way to find the factor. So the problem of factoring is the basis of encryption technology.

(Opposite of multiplication is factoring – 10X10 = 100

100 is multiplication and factoring is to know 10 and 10 are the factors)

142857 :

Example of 142857 – a 6 digit number – so we will multiply it till 6 and see:

142857 X 1 = 142857

142857 X 2 = 285714

142857 X 3 = 428571

142857 X 4 = 571428

142857 X 5 = 714285

142857X 6 = 857142

Look closely , the same numbers get interchanged in the answers , observe carefully!!!!!!!

Are there such n digit numbers so the if you can multiply by 1 through n , the number just cycles around ?

Yes example is 0588235294117647 ( 16 digits)
Try multiplying this 16 digit number with 1 and till 16 and the answers will be the same numbers just circling around.

Are there infinitely many such numbers ? No one knows ….

Reasons for this pattern is Self similarity and Fractals:

Pride is a result of complex. So if you are already feeling proud that it was an Indian who discovered these patterns and not the Italian Mathematician Fibonacci , it has nothing to do with Hemachandra or Fibonacci , it is to do with your own complex. And yes , I purposely didn’t mention that Hemachandra was a Jain monk born in Gujarat so as not to let any artificial pride get in the way of understanding the subject for what it is. Happy Easter!

GENERAL AVERAGE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF MARINE CARGO INSURANCE

General Average is a principle of maritime law, whereby all stakeholders in a sea venture proportionally share any losses resulting from a voluntary sacrifice of part of the ship or cargo to save the whole in an emergency.

The principle underlying General Average is generally regarded as having been first codified, in the Rhodian Law sometime in the 9th century B.C based on the principle “That which has been sacrificed for the benefit of all shall be made good by the contribution of all”.

In recent times, recognizing the need to formulate the principle to create uniformity across seafaring nations, a set of rules were laid down following conferences in York and Antwerp in the late 19th century, resulting in the York-Antwerp Rules, which is the standard rules relating to General Average in modern times.

The one crucial element that makes all the difference, when a General Average is declared is whether the cargo is insured or not and whether such insurance cover General Average and Salvage Claims. Marine Cargo Insurance can make all the difference in a General Average. The importance of Marine Cargo Insurance is twofold. The same not only indemnifies the policyholder for loss or damage to the cargo, but will also respond to General Average and Salvage Claims.

When a General Average is declared, an Average Adjuster is appointed to co-ordinate the claims, who formulate the extent of the loss which can include repairs to the vessel, salvage and towage costs, loss or damage to cargo survey costs etc. These costs, whilst not impacting directly on some parties, needs to be shared. The Average Adjuster approaches the parties to the voyage for contribution towards these costs in line with the principle of General Average.

If the cargo is insured, the insurers will deal with the Average Adjuster and provide a Guarantee to satisfy the claims of the General Average; leading to the release of the undamaged goods to the owner.

On the other hand, if the cargo is not insured, the Average Adjuster will request a cash deposit from the owner before releasing the undamaged goods. In certain circumstances, this can be a significant amount of money, which can put a great strain on the cargo owner.

It is therefore of paramount importance that the cargo is insured, prior to the shipment and special care should be taken to ensure that such insurance covers General Average and Salvage Claims. This will not only protect you for loss or damage to the cargo themselves, but will deal with any General Average and Salvage Claims, should such a situation arise.

HOW POROUS IS YOUR LIFE?

Some years ago, Kaleidoscope featured an article about ‘Techno-leapfrogging’. It’s a notion that persons, technology and economies can move themselves forward rapidly by adopting modern systems without going through the intermediary steps. Younger people do this easily because they take what is available now, as their starting point. Ask them what is a ‘brick’ mobile phone and they will have generally no idea. They take the internet, cloud storage and the fact that ‘World Wide Web’ was 30 years old last March for granted. Today the greater majority would be lost without their ‘www’ connection. So, when someone asked the Kaleidoscope team, if we enjoyed being connected, it was a challenge to compare what our social life situation was in 1989 with where we are now.

It will be difficult for some to realise that writing letters or sending a fax, way back then, was the only way to confirm a telephone discussion. However, unlike emails neither could be hacked and compromised. Equally can you imagine standing at a bus stop with nothing to do, where you take advantage of this opportunity to chat with other regular travellers to work? Nowadays many are lost in their isolated world of checking their mobiles. Yes, it is definitely true that we did use our time to interact with what was around us and consider things. Even with this approach some questioned if we were living life too fast. The 19th century acclaimed poet William Henry Davies, in his poem ‘Leisure’, wondered: –

‘What is this life if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?

Currently it’s the norm to walk about, ignoring others, with eyes staring down at our mobiles. Many are totally disconnected with their local and social environment, only just about trying to avoid bumping into others. There is certainly no consideration given to ‘standing and staring’, looking at what is going on around them. But what about the person who is not on a mobile? Someone who is looking around? Someone who is checking you out? In such circumstances the whole idea of social interaction is turned on its head. Distraction from our actual environment may mean we miss obvious opportunities whilst, at the same time, we have made ourselves ‘porous’ both visually and electronically.

Those who techno-leapfrog into such a situation have automatically accepted it as being normal. They feel comfortable, even though they are missing out on person to person contact and direct emotional interaction. Being primarily use to social media, staying in touch via mobiles, means they have no basis for comparison with anything else. Mobile communication demands instant responses. Such thoughts are almost ‘peer to peer’ which is why posts are put into the ‘Twittersphere’, ‘Snapchat’ or ‘Instagram’ which are later regretted, when it is too late.

New technology really should come with a warning that we need to reassess and refocus on how we communicate and understand others. In doing so we have to set aside a basic human characteristic of using body language and facial expressions as a way of interpreting what is really meant. Even Facebook or Skype video are restrictive in emotional terms. It is true that you can actually sense and smell fear and you can’t do this by video!
For those who believe that new technology is the next best thing since sliced bread, then perhaps it would help to consider how things have advanced since 1989. Apply the same rate of change and reasoning to where we are now and try asking yourself: –

“If Google, Apple and Amazon have us talking to them now, who will be listening and reacting to what we say in 30 years’ time?”

‘Hi Alexa set the alarm for 6am’ – ‘Hi Alexa play some Bollywood music’, sound innocent enough but it’s been reported that these messages are being stored and examined. Children love playing with dolls and ‘Barbie’ now interacts and build-ups responses with their very young owners. This is where human bonding starts to be replaced with technology and our lives become porous. We have started to leak out information, to others, without realising it. You may be reassured to know that tech companies apparently only listen selectively to your voice, on the basis that they can use information to improve their product. However recent reports, that some share voice clips without your knowledge, must be cause for future concern. Giving out personal information, without your realisation, means your home is no longer your castle because your walls have become porous. Technology is listening in; on the basis it is there to be your assistant.

Maybe as we reach for the future, we should keep a firm eye on how porous are our lives becoming. After all if things progress too far, we may reach a stage where is it too late to hanker for ‘Leisure’ where: –

‘We have no time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.
A poor life this, if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare’.

Consequently, it has always been a debatable issue as to which is more important, personal or company growth. However, I feel it is a topic that needs serious analysis. Nimble companies adapt to new situations and marketing conditions, whereas rigid companies eventually crack under the strain.

Growth is a word which motivates ambitious people, especially those who have already experienced the phenomena of company fortunes growing and falling. It’s unfortunate that self-centered persons never really take time to study the reasons for such ebbing and flowing events.

Correspondingly a company needs to find the time to recognise staff’s talents and promote their aspirations for personal growth. Such considerations lead to teams being assigned a manager or leader. Every holder of such positions must develop an ability to study team members’ aspirations and respond to them, both individually and collectively. In order for a company to grow successfully change is very important. Realistically meaningful changes are only possible when employees acclaim growth. This motivates them to take on new challenges, expand their capabilities, cultivate new behaviours and entertain innovation.

With these thoughts uppermost, my message for this edition of Lighthouse is specifically directed to the managers and leaders within the CSS Group. You have a responsibility to your company whilst, at the same time, ensuring that this responsibility cascades down to each of your team members. A healthy body relies on all its organs functioning properly. This makes everyone, regardless of their role, an important part of CSS. Our greatest asset is our staff and, as a responsible company focused on developing advancement; we must never forget that appreciating individual aspirations are a solid basis on which to build growth.
